Week 1

APRIL 11, 2023

ANUPAM MANDAL
NITTT ID : 20232123236
Activity 1: Assignment on Structure of Technical Education in India

➢ What is formal, informal and non-formal education? Give examples. List at least one advantage and
disadvantage for each.

❖ Formal education refers to as systematic and organised educational model whose structure is based on some
definite rules and laws. So, it represents rigid curriculum as regard objectives, content and methodology.
Examples: Technical Institutes, Engineering Colleges, Polytechnics, Industrial Centres, Vocational Secondary
education etc.
Advantages:
• It follows systematic and structured order to advance students learning to next stage of learning.
• Methodology and curriculum are fixed and non-flexible.
• It is certified and acquired by Professional and Teachers.
Disadvantages:
• Teaching methodology is expositive.
• Students participate in active learning process.
• Subjects are present in isolated blocks as per content or methodology.
• Individual growth of students is neglected.

❖ Non-formal education refers to an educative process which follows flexible curriculum and methodology. It is
capable of adapting the need and interest of students for which time is not a pre-established factor but is
contingent upon students work pace.
Examples: Correspondence Learning, Open Systems and Distance Education.
Advantages:
• Methodology and curriculum are flexible.
• It is not time bounded.
• It starts from basic needs of students.
• It is concerned with the establishment of strategies that are compatible with reality.
Disadvantages:
• It does not require any professional teacher to impart non-formal education.
• Regular examinations are not taken to evaluate students’ development.
• Students are physically separated from teachers.
• There may be lack of discipline, attitude, behaviour and ethical gesture among the students.
• There may be a possibility of fake certifications through different Institutions.

❖ Informal Education provides education outside structural curriculum in a natural and spontaneous way.
Examples: Self learning, reading, watching, Sharing, Team activity etc.
Advantages:
• It allows learners to learn in a natural way in their interested domain.
• It is not time bounded.
Disadvantages:
• Plenty of misinformation may learn.
• It does not follow any schedule.
• There may be absence of discipline, attitude and knowledge.
• Result is unpredictable.
Activity 2: Assignment on Technical Institutes
➢ Look for ITIs is in your geographical area. Name at least one. Mention the area of trades offered in that ITI
along with the duration. Also explore the syllabus for any one trade offered in that Institute.
