Freezing Point Depression Activity

DO NOT WRITE ON THIS SHEET--YOU AND YOUR PARTNER CAN WRITE ON ONE SHARED SEPARATE SHEET OF
PAPER!!

***Question: What happens to a glass of juice when you put in some ice cubes?

Follow directions carefully in this lab activity!!! You only get one set of materials!!

1. When called, one partner will come to the front of the room and get a cup of juice and a quart sized baggie.
Working together, pour the juice carefully into the baggie and CAREFULLY AND COMPLETELY seal the baggie.
Try to make sure most of the air is out of the baggie. CHECK ONE MORE TIME TO BE SURE THE BAGGIE IS
COMPLETELY SEALED!!

2. Send the other partner to the front of the room to get a large (gallon-sized) baggie. Put 2 scoops of crushed
ice into the large baggie. Also take one of the small beakers of salt and pour the salt into the large baggie with
the ice.

3. Back at your seat, take your small WELL-SEALED baggie with juice and place it into the large baggie.
COMPLETELY AND CAREFULLY SEAL THE LARGE BAGGIE—try to be sure as much air as possible has been
removed.

4. For the next 10 minutes, you need to gently move the baggie around in your hands—turn it, gently shake it,
etc. Both partners should take a turn. You need to stay at your seats for this part!! Your gloves/ mittens will
come in useful at this point! If you are not careful here, I will take your baggie away and give you book work—I
do not need a mess of salt water or juice on the floor or desks!

5. When 10 minutes have passed, check (without opening any baggies) the consistency of the juice. Is it still a
liquid? Then keep on moving that baggie! Has it turned into a slushy?? Then go on to step 6!

6. VERY CAREFULLY, open the large baggie. One partner takes the small baggie out and wipes the outside off
with a paper towel. The other partner goes to a lab sink ***FINDS THE TEMPERATURE OF THE ICE/ SALT/
WATER MIXTURE and dumps the ice and water out and rinses the large baggie. Bring the large baggie back to
the front. While at the front, get 2 small cups and 2 spoons.

7. Back at seat—write down the temperature of the large baggie contents, scoop slushy out in equal amounts
and enjoy!

8. After eating—

Cups and small baggie in garbage

Spoon in bin by the sink

Wipe off desk if needed

Turn paper over to see questions! Answer them on separate sheet!

***Questions—answer on a separate sheet. One sheet per pair is fine.

1. Describe any phase changes that occurred during this activity.

2. The teacher had some trouble with her activity. Observe the baggies that she prepared at the front
of the room.

a. What do you notice about the contents of the small baggie?

b. What step did the teacher forget?

3. Why is it necessary to add ice to the salt? Use the term freezing point depression in your answer.
Think about your answer to the very first question on the top of the front of this sheet.

4. Remember we said yesterday that HEAT moves from an area with more heat to an area with less
heat. Use this information to describe:

a. Why the liquid juice turned to slush

b. Why your hands got so cold (or would have if you did not wear gloves!)
