Laboratory Exercise No. 4
Terrestrial Ecosystem (Flower Garden) Food Chain, Food Web, Trophic Structure
And Species Interactions

I. Objectives:

1. To identify and classify the biotic and abiotic components of the flower garden ecosystem.
2. To understand what a trophic structure is and identify the different trophic levels
3. To construct food chains and food webs based on the components of the terrestrial ecosystem.
4. To describe the different species interactions existing in the ecosystem

II. Procedure/Method:

1. Look for a typical flower garden ecosystem in Central Philippine University.

2. Take a picture of your chosen ecosystem.
3. Identify and classify all the biotic and abiotic components of the terrestrial ecosystem
identified.
4. Identify the different trophic levels and construct a trophic structure.
5. Make 5 food chains and construct a food web.
6. Identify and discuss the different species interactions existing in the ecosystem.
III. Data, Illustrations and Discussions:

Flower Garden of CPU

IV. Conclusions:

In conclusion we are able to find different species living in a garden ecosystem, they
show different symbiotic relationships. Also we can see the different food chains in an
ecosystem. We learn that food chain is an important conceptual tool for illustrating the feeding
relationships among species within a community, revealing species interactions and community
structure, and understanding the dynamics of energy transfer in an ecosystem.

Reminder: Observe physical distancing/minimum health protocol during data collection.
