Capstone Project Proposal

Name of student:  Amy Jeon
Date:  May 4th, 2023
Teacher:  Ms. Lacroix
Capstone strand I have chosen is  Occupation strand
Proposed title for my project:  The responsibilities that follow Optometrists

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

Will optometrists be replaced by AI’s and Robots?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry
connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I am choosing this as my inquiry question because I know that our world will depend heavily on
artificial intelligence as time goes. Even already, there are AIs that have taken over human jobs.
An example for this can be robots that work as servers at restaurants, or self-check-out machines
at fast food restaurants, clothing stores, and grocery stores. By the time I graduate from
Optometry school, it will be almost 10 years from now. A lot of the technology and AI systems
will develop significantly in those years. So, I always wonder, “In 10 years, how different will
optometrists’ exam rooms look? Will it be highly dependent on technology and AIs?” Therefore,
I was able to come up with the specific inquiry question.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this
area of inquiry?

From the research I have done on the topic so far, all resources have been stating that AIs will
not be completely replacing optometrists. Instead, they will upgrade the career since they will
give great assistance and make optometrists’ jobs easier.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

I want to become an Optometrist in the future. I chose the inquiry question because if AIs do end
up replacing optometrists, then it would affect the career goal I have since it may not be a safe
career to aim for in the long run.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Strengths
1. “I can express my needs and seek help when needed.”

As a student, I have the habit of asking teachers for help whenever I feel unconfident in an area
of study. While taking Chemistry 12 last semester, I encountered concepts from lessons that I did
not comprehend. I knew that I needed to reach out for help to excel in the subject and gain more
knowledge, so I never hesitated when asking questions to the teacher.

2. “I use a variety of strategies to manage my personal well-being.”

If I feel down or not motivated, I reach out to my friends and family to talk about the concern. I
do not bottle up my emotions because I know that keeping worries to myself instead of being
open about them pressures me even more. Also, I enjoy going to the gym because exercising
helps me take my mind off stressful situations, and I feel healthier both mentally and
physically.

Area of Improvement
1. “I understand learning takes patience and time.”

In Calculus class, I struggled a lot while solving word problems. Even while knowing that
Calculus is a difficult subject, I was frustrated with myself when I could not get the correct
answers without the help of a teacher or peers. Eventually, I started to doubt myself and my
ability to learn. Moving ahead, I will remind myself that knowledge and understanding are built
over time and that learning is a complex set of processes.

Social Responsibility

Strengths
1. “I am aware of my community and environment and work independently and
collaboratively for the benefit of others.”

I am able to cooperate with my peers and work hard on what I am assigned to do. In Chemistry
class, when we were given 3 days to complete a university-level lab report, I worked rigorously
without wasting any time. I barely had the time to sleep over the few days because I was aiming
for perfection as it was an opportunity to show the teacher that I work well individually. During
that time, one of my classmates who I was not close to, messaged me, asking for pictures of my
lab to copy off. I knew that doing that would not be beneficial for her as she would not be
understanding the concept clearly if she simply rewrites everything I wrote. Also, I did not want
to directly give out an “answer key” for her to look at, since my lab report was done with
stressful hours of research and hard work. So, instead of showing what I wrote, I told the
classmate to show me the specific parts she was having trouble with. Once she told me, I then
gave her a step-by-step explanation in words instead of simply sending a picture of everything I
wrote. This way, the classmate could learn the concept properly without depending on my lab
report.

2. “I value diversity, defend human rights, advocate for others, and act ethically in
all my interactions, including online.”

I respect diversity and human rights. That being said, I am also extremely against racism. My
friends and I faced racism when Covid-19 was a bigger issue a few years ago. A group of
teenage boys standing next to us in the Skytrain station yelled out, “You Chinese people are the
reason why we have to live like this!” while pulling their eyes, giving us the finger and laughing.
Instead of freezing up on the spot, I, along with another friend knew how to defend ourselves by
telling them that firstly, we are not from China and that not all East Asians are Chinese.
Secondly, we told them that even if we were Chinese, that does not mean that they can be
insensitive and racist about the topic since Chinese people did not “create” the virus. I am
normally a quiet person, but when it comes to issues like this, I know how to speak up to the
person or people in the wrong.

Area of Improvement
1. I can identify and appreciate different perspectives on issues and use and
evaluate strategies to resolve problems.

A year ago, I had a small argument with my friend. I was angry with her attitude and the way she
treated me, and instead of trying to think from her perspective, I was too upset to reach out to her
until she apologized. Like this, if I know for sure that I am not in the wrong during an argument,
I do not reach out to the other person first. Because of that, it takes me a while to resolve
conflicts by viewing others' perspectives. Next time I come across an issue, I will take time to
understand and look at things from the other person’s point of view.

Critical Thinking

Strengths
1. “I can assess my progress.”

When I first started going to the gym, I did not know how to use any of the gym equipment.
However, as I got familiar with the rules and equipment usage of the weight room after asking
friends who are familiar with the topic, I started using equipment that would help engage the
muscles I wanted to target. From then, I started seeing small changes in my body shape, and even
my friends complimented me, saying that they could see a difference too. I also take pictures of
myself when I go to the gym so that later on, I can keep track of my progress.

2. “I can ask good quality questions, gather relevant information, and come up with
well-developed conclusions.”

Last year, for 20th Century World History, I had to do a final project comparing the Russian
Revolution vs Cuban Revolution. I had to gather information about all the leaders and how the
wars affected the world in the short term and long term. Since I was not too familiar with the
topic, I initially asked questions about the revolutions to the teacher, and she gave me some
suggestions on what information she considered important and worthy of including. Next, I
researched focusing on the points that my teacher talked about to gain relevant data and put
together a 16-page PowerPoint with detailed explanations at the end. With my hard work, I got
an extending on the project and my teacher even said that she will use my PowerPoint as an
example to show to future classes.

Area of Improvement
1. “I can analyze and critique my work and my learning.”

I sometimes have trouble analyzing my work at school. Before I hand in a writing assignment, I
sometimes forget to proofread parts of it, and even when I do, since it is something that I have
been staring at and working on for so long, I often do not catch mistakes. To prevent from this
happening, I could try printing out a copy of my writing instead of viewing it from a screen so
that I can mark my mistakes. Or I could have my family members and friends proofread for me
because others may be able to catch the errors that I did not notice.

Creative Thinking

Strengths

1. “I can take my ideas, evaluate, develop, and refine them and make something
productive out of them.”

When I volunteered in the kitchen for the Salvation of Army Meal Centre, I noticed that much of
the food used at the centre had already expired. From what I saw, food donations were coming in
every hour, but most of them were being built up in the fridge or thrown away because there
were unnecessarily many foods. I thought that shortening the donation delivery cycles would
benefit the shelter since there would be less donated food sitting in the kitchen for a long time
and expiring. I decided that I should speak about this problem to the volunteer coordinator. I
suggested that if the meal centre communicated to the donors in advance the specific food that
was needed for the week’s menu, we could receive only the needed ingredients. That way, there
would not be any leftover, expired food being used to make meals for the homeless people living
in the shelter. Once the coordinator heard my idea, he said he would adjust the donation cycles
with extra care. I believe that this adjustment improved the organization for homeless people and
their health.

2. “I can persevere and understand that failure can be productive.”

I know that failure helps me improve. In Calculus, I did more poorly than I expected to on one of
the tests. Although I was disappointed after seeing the mark at first, I did not give up. Instead, I
went to compare my answer to a friend who got the correct answer and searched for the area that
I needed to improve on. Like this, when I encounter a moment of “failure”, I ponder the reason
for it and learn from my mistake.

Area of Improvement
1. “I can create new and unique ideas that may provide new perspectives that
influence how people think about topics.”

I am a practical person who does not devote time to thinking about unrealistic ideas. If there is a
new thought that springs to mind, but it is something that I am unable to complete from my level,
I completely stop thinking about it. So in a way, even if I think of a unique plan, I stop building
on it if it requires a lot of imagination and new perspectives. To work on being more creative and
taking my ideas to the next level, I should try to be more open-minded and less logical.

Communication

Strengths
1. “I can work with other students to plan, inquire, and solve problems.”

In Calculus class, my friends and I were having trouble understanding a concept, but the teacher
was not at school and there was a substitute teacher who was not familiar with calculus. To solve
the questions, I went around reaching out to other classmates that I had never talked to before
and got help from some of them. While talking to them, I found out that the classmates were
confused about questions that I solved, so I was able to help them in return as well.

3. I can reflect on the processes of learning and share what I have learned.”

I can share what I have learned so far in CLC 12. I discovered my true values through the All
About Me Poster. Before working on it, I did not think deeply about what is important to me and
my characteristics, but I am now able to keep my values in mind. The Mirror Assignment
reminds me of the adversity I faced in the past. Sharing my hardships through a piece of writing
made me feel more comfortable opening up to the teacher and I appreciated getting to do this
assignment. The 16 Personalities reflection let me describe more deeply who I am as a person,
my strengths and my weaknesses. I found it a very fun activity to do, and I got to learn about
myself during the process. Lastly, I learned how to make a website, which was what I wanted to
learn! I’m looking forward to the things I’m going to do for Capstone.

Area of Improvement
1. I can engage in deep and meaningful inquiry for a variety of purposes and
audiences.”

Honestly, sometimes I do not know the purpose of my work. I simply just do them because I
have to and every time I get new assignments, I do not think deeply about what they are helpful
for. I don’t find out the true purpose and meaning of the assignments, which technically means
that I do not consider my audience. This is a part that I need to work on.

Personal & Cultural Identity

Strengths
1. “I understand what is important to me.”

I know that spending quality time with close and loved ones is extremely important to me. When
I am having a hard time with anything happening in life, my family and friends are the ones I
depend on to feel better. They are always there for me through the ups and down so I cannot
imagine living life without their support, and I appreciate their presence.

2. “I understand how the value I have will shape my choices.”

One of my top values is Self-Respect. I believe that if I don’t respect myself, other people won’t
either. Therefore, I act like I am confident, even when I am not. For example, when I am with my
friends, I often compare my looks to theirs and wonder why I am not as pretty as them. However,
even though I think this way, I purposely try to act confident at least on the outside, which
eventually makes me feel better about myself while also making others see me as a confident
person. After all, there is a saying, “Fake it until you make it”!

Area of Improvement
1. “I know my strengths and what makes me unique.”

I have always struggled to find what is unique about me. Other people have talents like dancing,
drawing, singing, or being good at sports. However, I have focused my entire life on studying to
the point where I am not exceptionally talented at anything else. Although I have played the
piano for nearly 10 years of my life, I do not think my skills are impressive enough to be called a
talent. I am trying to find something that I am truly passionate about and find strengths in
myself.

o imovie presentation
o YouTube channel

I am going to be creating a podcast, most likely on Spotify. I will be presenting my project by
playing a short part of one of my episodes.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

As I follow the occupation strand for my project, I am going to be seeing if AI’s might take over
optometrists’ job in the future. I will be shadowing my optometrist and have him as my mentor
to observe what he does while he works. By being in the optometry exam room, I will be seeing
the tools that optometrists uses to diagnose patients. When I do this, I will be able to predict and
come up with theories of which one of those tools may be replaced by an AI or technology in the
future and how that would make the job of an optometrist less complex. Also, since I am going
to be watching what an optometrist does in a day, I can develop deeper understanding of the
career, how to treat a patient, how to speak to them in a polite manner, and possible pros and
cons of the job that future optometry students should be aware of. After gathering all the facts
like this, I will then create a podcast that contains eveything that I learn. It will be mainly
targetted for future optometry students like me, because there may be students that are unsure,
concerned, or curious of how AIs will come into support for Optometry. All the information that
I give out in the podcast will be in detail, based on something that I have witnessed with my own
eyes. It will also be reliable since an optometrist will be there to give insightful answers to the
questions I have that will be used for the podcast.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and
skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

I will be relying on my mentor for a lot of the information for the project. By shadowing my
optometrist, I will be able to learn a lot of new and helpful information that can be used for my
podcast. If I have any questions, I can reach out to the optometrist for more specific detail, or do
research independently on my own, by using reliable online resources such as Jstor, google
scholar and others.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will
you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

I will need to connect with an Optometrist who is passionate and comprehends how their career
will change in the future year. The mentor will help me by demonstrating how to be successful in
the profession by showing skills that are important to have and smaller details that are not
catchable from only a patient’s perspective, like what other responsibilities optometrists have in
between appointments. To maintain a healthy connection with a mentor, I will need to keep in
touch with them consistently and always speak to them in a polite manner, while asking
helpful/deep questions that can be informative for my project.

Project limitations:  What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

In order to be able to shadow the optometrist, live patients need to give consent. While some
patients may agree, others may decline if they do not want to be observed during their
appointment. This will be an obstacle for my project since my strand requires active job
shadowing which I will have to do for 40 hours.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

I will be trying to finish the shadowing by the end of April, so that I can focus on making the
podcast during the month of May.
