Instrument Lesson Plan

Title: 5 Little Monkeys Grade Level: Kindergarten
Source: Music Library Share the Music

Materials needed:
Shakers, Drums, Triangles, Rhythm Sticks, Jingle Bells, Speaker

Procedure:
A.S: Ask students if they ever jump on their bed at home. Is it fun? What are
some consequences of that? Do your parents allow you to? Well today we are
going to listen to a song about some monkeys who have jumped on the bed.

1. Divide students into 5 different groups of monkeys. Have students

pretend to be monkeys.
2. We are going to all pat our legs when the monkeys jump on the bed
3. Once the doctor comes in to say “no more monkeys jumping on the
bed” the monkey group that fell off will be the only group playing their
instruments.
4. Have students listen to song while doing the pats. Giving each monkey
group the chance to play solo.
5. Give each monkey group a different instrument. 5 groups of different
instruments.
1: Drums 2: Shakers 3: Triangles 4: Sticks 5: Bells
6. Allow students to play instruments until all are passed out. Then review
the different families.
7. Have students place instruments on the ground. Review the group
numbers and who will play first.
8. Start song, having all instruments play along to the beat.
9. Once it says “The doctor said” have group 1 (drums) play solo.
10. Have all instruments play together once again, when the doctor
comes, have group 2 (shakers) play solo.
11. Have all instruments play together once again, when the doctor
comes, have group 3 (triangles) play solo.
12. Have all instruments play together once again, when the doctor
comes, have group 4 (rhythm sticks) play solo.
13. Have all instruments play together once again, when the doctor
comes, have group 5 (jingle bells) play solo.

Closure:
Review the different families. Then ask if they preferred to play together or
one at a time as solos.

Educational Objective:
Students will be able to correctly identify different instrument families
through use in a song.
