ACKNOWLEDGMENT

This study would not have been possible without the encouragement and advice from our
subject teacher Ma'am Anne Marie Albito. We are grateful for their feedback and valuable
knowledge. We also thank to our group members for giving helpful suggestions.

We cannot find words to express our gratitude towards our parents and family. Without
their financial support, especially under the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

3
Hydroponic growing in controlled environment horticulture has been an increasingly used
method of produce production around the world. This study investigated control variables that would
produce and market a more effective petchay crop. Under such circumstances, in near future it will
become impossible to feed the entire population using open field system of agricultural production
only. Naturally, hydroponic is becoming more relevant in the present scenario, to cope -up with this
challenges. In hydroponic system, plants are raised without the soil. Improved space and water
conserving methods of food production under hydroponic system have shown some promising results
all over the World. Growing plants hydroponically represent a possible opportunity towards sustainable
crop production; it would be beneficial to examine the feasibility and the potential ability to replace soil
systems for growing petchay. Growing petchay in hydroponic systems are feasible, at reasonable cost
and more sustainable compared to traditionally soil grown systems. This research will impact future
studies in effective small scale hydroponic growing and growers looking to expand knowledge of
beneficial growth.

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Hunger is an uncomfortable or painful physical sensation caused by insufficient

consumption of dietary energy. According to World Food Program (WFP), 690 million people
around the world wil go to bed on an empty stomach. Their stomach may feel empty and
grumbly. Food is one of the basic needs of a human being to survive, all of us depend on food for
having a good health.
A major reason of hunger is food shortage. The reasons for hunger and food insecurity
are many and vary from country to country, but generally, it is a result of conflict, poverty,
economic shocks such as hyperinflation and rising commodity prices and environmental shocks
such as flooding or drought. However, agricultural sector has been beset with persistent
challenges resulting in low fa incomes, low rural employment, lack of food security, and meager
agricultural competitiveness. According to Republic Act No. 11148 The state declares it's
determination to eliminate hunger and reduce all forms of malnutrition.
Many factors can affect someone's appetite, including their environment, lifestyle, mental
health, and physical health. According to a recent National Nutrition Survey by the Food And
Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), about one million Filipino children suffer from acute
malnutrition. Malnutrition results when someone has insufficient nutrients for their needs.
Symptoms of malnutrition include weight and muscle loss, a weakened immune system, falls and
hair loss.
Organic Agriculture Actof 2010 (Republic Act No. 10068). An Act providing for the
development and promotion of organic agriculture in the Philippines and for other purposes.
Improving agricultural productivity helps address both hunger and poverty: not only does it
increase the amount of food available. It stimulates economic growth by creating jobs, both on-
and off- farm, which raise people's income and enable themto purchase food. The Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the Nation's largest domestic food and nutrition
assistance program for low income.
In some Barangay in Municipality Aleosan distribute Agricultural and Livestock
Livelihood and some vulnerable families who suffers hunger. Planting vegetables and fruits is
the way to produce foods. Agricultural is very important to reduce hunger because it helps us to
sustain life by providing the food we need to survive.
In related to this study, we the students of Aleosan National High School (ANHS)
conduct a research study in our Science Investigatory Project on which tactical gardening most
productive in growing plant to solve the hunger problem. This study provide comprehensive in
comparing which yield of soil versus hydroponics grow faster. We study how to plant using styro
box so that we can easily plant even in your small place backyard

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In world, the increasing population on a near stabilized agricultural land placesa heavy
burden on the soil resource particularly its nutrient supplying power.Intensive agriculture
involving the use of chemical fertilizers in large amount has nodoubt, resulted in manifold
increase in the productivity of farm commodities but, adverse effects of these chemicals are
clearly visible on soil structure, microflora, andquality of water, food and fodder. Research
studies are being conducted to findsolution to avoid these hazardous effects and to obtain higher
yield with quality food.In this context, literature pertaining to the importance of micronutrients,
problems inmicronutrient absorbance by plant roots and usefulness of amino acid
chelatedmicronutrients in vegetable production is reviewed.

6
INTERVENTION

Tactical Gardening is very useful for those people people who living in a crowded place
to carry farming without the need for heavy investing. Tactical Gardening is also offers increased
access to healthy, locally grown, and culturally appropriate food sources. Any free space around
the house can be converted into a tactical garden. Growing your foods through your tactical
garden helps cut down on expenses.

The great thing about Tactical Gardening is that you don't need a large backyard or a
large piece of land. You can use recyclable material and different methods to get started.
Hydroponic garden are also ingenious and utilize small spaces very well, perfect for tiny
apartment, they use no soil and instead have plants growing in water full of nutrients.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Through strategic gardening, this research seeks to teach learners the value of planting in
tiny spaces.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. Is there a significant difference between seed type, planting system and the interaction plant
height and leave lengths?

2. Did, hydroponic system give the best growth results with all seeds types?

8
METHODOLOGY
PARTICIPANTS

In this study the Grade 12 HUMSS learners will serve as a respondents for taste test.
There are 2 selected students outside the group will also serve as a respondents.

SOURCE OF DATA/ INFORMATION

The data collection tools will be used in this study are the following:

1. ACTUAL OBSERVATION

2. GARDEN JOURNAL

3. RESEARCH QUESTIONS FOR TASTE TEST

DATA GATHERING METHODS

The first step of conducting this experiment is to choose the plant type which is the
petchay. We chosen petchay because it is a good starter plant for beginner gardeners and
germinate quickly to expedite the experiment. There are twelve petchay seeds in total, 6 seeds
for hydroponic planting and 6 seeds for soil.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR HYDROPONIC SYSTEM

1. Big styro box included water with a big hole for the small styro cup to fix it in the big
container.
2. Small styro cups with small holes that allows water enter inside it.
3. Coco peat to hold the plant.
4. Nutrient solution A, which consist of
5. Nutrient solution B, which consist of
6. Water

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR SOIL SYSTEM

1. Plastic Container/cups with small holes at the bottom.

2. Fertile soil

3. Water

PROCEDURES FOR SOIL SYSTEM:

1. Fill the tire with planting soil.

2. Place seeds in the soil inside the tire.

3. Writing the plants and check it everyday if there are changes.

PROCEDURES FOR HYDROPONIC SYSTEM

1. Prepare the hydroponics solution by adding A and B nutrient solutions in the water.

2. Plant small seedlings out their pots and carefully washing away most of the soil from the
roots.

3. Place the clean seedlings in the growing medium who contain small cocopit and into the
hydroponic solution container.

10
4. Control the chemical balance of nutrients (solution A and B ) to water by adding mostly
water. Finally check and monitor daily plants growth fir both systems in the experiment.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Petchay that grow in a hydroponic system are healthier, grow quickly but they also
yield more. If we compare the hydroponic petchay and soil-grown petchay, crops produced
hydroponically yields 20-25% more than crops produced in the soil. Hydroponic plants produce
a greater yield of plants because in a hydroponic system plants are more densely space
together compared to the size of land that would be needed to grow the same number of
plants. The hydroponic system would last through multiple seasons without the need to
replace the soil. The soil for soil system would eventually have to be replaced, fertilized and
other efficient management practices.

CONCLUSION

This study analyzed the production capacity, land, and energy use of a hydroponic
system in Aleosan National High School to produce petchay. There a significant difference
between seed type, planting system and the interaction plant height and leave lengths. This
analysis aimed to determine how hydroponics reduces dependence on food import and migrates
issues of conventional agricultural methods mostly related to land limitations. Hydroponic
system give the best growth results with all seeds types. The industry is expected of soil growing
is becoming difficult.
