roads and other structures.

The earthquake’s epicenter was in Brentwood California which is about 43 miles from the UCLA
campus according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Maxwell Terrazas.

“We are astounded by the bravery and courage of all Angelenos in the face of this unexpected
disaster,” Terazas said. “The LADF is continuing to access the damage and we will do our part to
To
insure the safety of the city we all call home. We just want to give everyone piece of mind and
diffuse any and all concerns.”

UCLA’s Powel Library suffered severe structural damage in the wake of the earthquake.

“When I showed up to work on Thursday, I was shocked to see that the bells of Powell were
completely destroyed,” said Cynthia MacKenzie, a sophomore Engineering major who operates
the bell’s at Royce. “I was devastated. Those bells are my life, they were my life.”

Chancellor James Block echoed Terraza’s sediments of strength and solidarity.

“We’re gonna do everything we can do rebuild and restore” Block said, “This earthquake has put
our community through the ringer. But we are Bruins’ and we are strong. We will get through
this.”

De Neve Residential Dining Hall nearly burned down, as well, Terazzas said.
“We have concluded that a burner was left on in the dining hall, so when the earthquke struck, it
ignited a larger fire.” he said.”en
UCLA Residential Life estimates that it will take about six months and $3 million dollars to
repare the damage to the dining hall.

“My friend texted me a few hours after the earthquake and said “did you hear about De Neve?”

and I was so sad because, um, that was my favorite dining hall,” MacKenzie said.

which were not sizemically sound. However, due to the pandemic, much of that construction had
halted and buildings like Powell and Kerckoff were damaged in the earthquake since they had
yet to be retrofitted. N zn t l

Given that it is was the 100-year anniversary of Powell’s construction, the damage to the bells is
particularly devastating, Block said.

“Those bells are part of our history and I’m gonna do everything in my power to make sure they
are fixed as soon as possible,” said Block. “We will also be speeding up construction efforts on
all buildings so they are up to code and safer for our community.”

These buildings should not have been left in the state they were when the earthquake struck, and
we desperately need to improve our campus safety.Blocksaid

Many students were upset they probably wouldn’t be able to visit some of these beautiful
buildings again before they graduated because of the damage.

“I can’t f*****g believe I may never study in Powell again,” said third-year phy sci student Carl
Beaupre. “It’s just so sad that an earthquake had to happen this close to campus and our buildings
weren’t prepared for it.”

Block said he was committed to dedicating more resources to rebuilding these structures so that
students and faculty could enjoy them sooner rather than later. He exclaimed that he would make
the rebuilding one of his top priorities.

Ii
“This truly was a wake up call for our community,” he said. “I want every one to know that we
will be working hard on the rebuilding plans and that we want these buildings to reopen as soon
as they safely can do so.”
