International Roaming – FAQs

Can I buy my International Roaming pack now and use it later?


Yes. All our international roaming packs start only once you travel abroad and start using your
mobile services abroad. This service is available for postpaid and prepaid customers.
Postpaid customers can purchase Airtel’s international roaming pack and will get charged for it
only when they travel abroad. For e.g. If you have purchased a 10 days pack and you travel to an
International country after 2 months, you will be charged in that billing cycle. Additionally, the
validity will start only once you latch on to the international network (Postpaid customers can
travel within 365 days after purchasing a pack).
For prepaid customers, the pack will be valid for 30 days and you can travel anytime in the next
30 days. Pack will get activated only once you reach your destination and latch on to an
international network.

What to do if I’m not able to get network in abroad?


If you’re unable to latch on to a network, restart your phone once you land.
If the issue still persists, try to latch on to a network manually. For further support you can call or

Do I get unlimited Data in my international roaming pack?


On Airtel postpaid, you can enjoy unlimited data in 180+ countries with our international roaming
packs. Once high-speed data as per the pack is over, you can use unlimited data throttled at 80
kbps.
For prepaid customers who have purchased an international roaming pack, data will be blocked
once high-speed data is used. For more details on the pack benefits and countries covered, you

Will my International Roaming pack work in all countries?


Airtel International Roaming packs will work in 180+ countries. If you’re traveling to multiple
countries, the same pack will work across the covered countries as per the benefits mentioned
on our website.

Can I track my usage when in IR?
Yes, you can track pack benefits, usage and validity on Airtel Thanks App anytime during your
travel.
Prepaid – You can track their real-time usage (data, validity, voice and SMS).
Postpaid – There may be a delay of up to 4 hours in updation for voice and SMS usage.

Can I Buy more than one pack for International Roaming?


Postpaid - only one International Roaming pack can be purchased at a time. You can purchase a
data top up anytime if you have an active international roaming pack.
In case, the validity of the international pack gets over while you’re abroad, you can purchase
another international roaming pack.
Prepaid- You can buy only one International Roaming pack when you are in India.
If you are in international roaming, you can buy an additional pack and enjoy accretive benefits
of both packs.

When will I be charged for my International Roaming pack?


Postpaid - You pay as per the usage. The pack gets activated only once you start using it in
international roaming. For e.g. If you have opted for 10 days pack and during your visit abroad,
there is no usage on your number, you will not be charged the pack rental.
Prepaid- you will have to pay for the pack upfront during your recharge. The pack will be valid for
30 days and you can travel anytime in the next 30 days. Pack will get activated only once you
reach your destination.

Can I switch on/switch off IR service anytime?


Postpaid- You can enable or disable IR service at the touch of a button on Airtel Thanks App at
any point. Alternatively, you can call or whatsapp us on +91-9910099100 (International toll free)
and request for IR service activation/deactivation
Prepaid- You can enable and disable International Roaming services by sending SMS “IRSTART”
or “IRSTOP” to 121 respectively.
IR services stay active until it is manually switched off through above mentioned platform. Also,
please note that once IR services are disabled, you’ll not be able to use voice/data/SMS services
in abroad.

Can I activate the International Roaming pack after reaching destination


country?
Yes, you can activate international roaming pack even when you are abroad.
If you don’t have Airtel thanks app installed on your phone, please follow below mentioned steps:
* Install Airtel Thanks App or visit www.airtel.in/IR
* Enter the country you are visiting
* Enter your mobile number
You will get the list of packs available for the entered country
* Select the pack of your choice and click on ‘Get It’ option
You can also do the same from Airtel Thanks app:
* Go to the app and select International roaming option in your prepaid/postpaid account
* Enter the country you are visiting
* Choose the pack as per your requirement and click “Select” button

Can I use data and voice benefits without buying IR Pack?


Yes. You can use data and voice benefits while in international roaming. Standard charges will
apply for any usage.
For countries which are not covered by any Airtel Roaming pack, data services will be blocked to
avoid unintentional usage charges, however, voice and SMS services will work and you will be
charged as per standard charges. Refer to the following link for standard rates www.airtel.in/ir.

What should I do if there is no IR Pack available for my destination


country?
To avoid unintentional data usage charges, we have blocked data usage in Non-IR pack countries.
You can still use voice benefits; standard charges will apply in such case. It is suggested that you
use these services only for emergency situations. Refer to the following link for standard rates
