Wood product demand and supply in Ethiopia

Wood demand in Ethiopia is growing steadily due to

increasing purchasing power, economic growth, middle
class, urbanization and construction development.
Fuel wood demand is estimated to be 120.4million m3
and industrial wood is estimated 8.4 million m3.

A supply of 4.4 million cubic meter of industrial wood will

be required to satisfy the demand by 2033. Total
volume of wood products demand is approximated to
1.2million m3 in 2015 and 13.9 by 2040. Wood product
was supplied by woodlot and natural forest but it is
currently substituted by import products.

Ethiopia imported an average of 65680m3/year of

industrial wood products by year 2007-2015. The main
products were sawn wood, plywood and furniture.
Ethiopia export small quantity of wood products.

The estimated amount in the year 2010 showed that 85 million m3 of wood products
needed in Ethiopia. Total wood demand in 2015 measured by volume of wood
consumed in the country from both import and domestic productions approximately
130.3 million m3 round wood equivalent. Approximately 92.3% of this is in the form
of wood fuel and rest is industrial wood.

In Ethiopia, wood and other forest products supply comes

from domestic production and import. 85% of wood
demand has been covered by indigenous timber species
logged from natural forests and agro-forest.
