DATES SEEDS:
Dates are a low cost source of carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals and dietary fiber.
Date fruit have polyphenols, anthocyanins, carotenoids, tannins and sterols. Dates are
rich in flavonoids and phenolics, which have strong antioxidant properties.
They typically begin to bear fruit in April or May, and are "ripe for the picking"
around late August to September. A single tree can produce 200 to 300 pounds of fruit
per year, and it can be harvested many times throughout a season, as the dates do not
ripen all at once.
POMEGRANATE SEEDS:
Each seed is surrounded by a sweet edible pulp called aril, and can range in color from
white to deep red or purple. The seeds are embedded in a white, spongy, bitter pulp.
Some of the fruitless varieties are grown for their flowers alone.
Pomegranate plants flower and provide fruits throughout the year in central and
southern India. Depending on patterns of precipitation, flowering can be induced during
June-July (mrig bahar), September-October (hasta bahar) and January-February (ambe
bahar).
