Numerical Methods
1. Use Newton’s method to determine the root of the equation ex + x = 0 which lies in the
region –0.5 to –0.7. Give your answer correct to three decimal places.

2. The solution of the equation 3lnx = x lies in the range 4 to 5. Find this solution correct
to three decimal places.

3. Use Newton’s method to solve the following equations to the accuracy given:
(a) x4 + x = 16 (four significant figures)
(b) 2sinx + 2x = 1 (three decimal places in range 0 to π/2)

4. Use the Newton’s method to evaluate the following roots to the accuracy indicated:
(a) 1462 (4 sig. fig)
(b) 2.33 (5 sig. fig)
3
(c) 0.3247 (5 sig. fig)

5. Show that the equation e-2x – x2 = 0 has a root between 0.5 and 0.6. Use Newton’s
method to obtain the root correct to 2 places of decimals.

6. The equation x3 + x –1 = 0 has a root in the vicinity of x = 0.7. By using the Newton’s
method, find the value of this root correct to three decimal places.
