ABOUT UNICEF
UNICEF was created in 1946 under the name of
International Children’s Emergency Funds (ICEF) by U.N.
Relief Rehabilitation Administration to provide immediate
relief to children and mothers affected by World War II. In
1950, UNICEF's mandate was extended to address the long-
term needs of children and women, particularly in
developing countries. In 1953, the organization became a
permanent part of the United Nations System, and its name
was subsequently changed to its current form, though it
retains the original acronym. The headquarters of UNICEF is
situated in New York City.
ORIGIN OF UNICEF
 United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) is a United
Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian
and developmental aid to children worldwide.

 UNICEF is a successor of International Children’s

Emergency Funds (ICEF), created in 1946 and was
renamed to its current name in 1953.
FUNCTIONS OF UNICEF
 UNICEF is formed to help the survival, protection
and development of children.

 It insists that the survival, protection and

development of children are universal development
imperatives that are integral to human progress.

 UNICEF is used to aid all the poor, homeless

children and mothers around the world during
difficult times.
FUNDING of UNICEF
The UNICEF is funded by the government and private
donors. A large amount of its economy is also coming from
sponsorships. As of 2018, UNICEF’s total income was $5.2
billion, of which 2 thirds came from governments. The
remaining was private groups and individuals through
national committees.
Sponsorship
 In 2003, UNICEF sponsored Italian football
club Piacenza Calcio 1919 until 2008.
 On 7 September 2006, an agreement between UNICEF
and the Spanish Catalan association football club FC
Barcelona was reached whereby the club would donate
€1.5 million per year to the organization for five years.
As part of the agreement, FC Barcelona would wear the
UNICEF logo on the front of their uniforms.
 In January 2007 UNICEF struck a partnership with
Canada's national tent pegging team. The team was
officially re-flagged as "UNICEF Team Canada", and its
riders wear UNICEF's logo in competition, and team
members promote and raise funds for UNICEF's
campaign against childhood HIV-AIDS.
THE
CONTRIBUTIONS
OF
UNICEF
PROVIDING CARE
DURING World War II
The UNICEF was first made in order to help the children
and mothers who suffered the consequences during and after
world war two ended. The majority of sufferings were
starvation and the spread of many contagious diseases.
National mission on
immunization
To accelerate full immunization coverage and to reach the
unreached, the Government of India along with UNICEF,
launched an ambitious program called Mission
Indradhanush, the largest immunization program in the
world in terms of the number of beneficiaries, geographical
coverage and quantities of vaccine used, with nearly 27
million new-born targeted for immunization annually. Over
nine million immunization sessions are held across India
every year towards full immunization coverage.
National mission FOR
DRINKING WATER
Clean drinking water ensuring survival and improved
outcomes across all outcomes for every child. This was the
motto for both the Indian government and UNICEF India for
their mission for providing everyone with clean drinking
water for their survival. All children have the right to clean
water and basic sanitation, as stated in the Convention on the
Rights of a Child. The ultimate aim of UNICEF’s work in
water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is to ensure that all
children fulfill this right, and that no child is left behind.
National LITERACY
mission
UNICEF is committed to ensuring all children in India have
access to inclusive and equitable quality education. This was
the motto taken up by UNICEF. The aim of UNICEF is to
ensure that every child receives basic education till the age
of 15. The government helped UNICEF by launching ‘beti
bachao, beti padhao’ program that ensures the
encouragement of proper basic studies of girls.
Community development
program
The community development program has been started in
the rural areas of India with UNICEF’s assistance, aimed at
maternal and child health. The Community Development
Program has been the biggest rural reconstruction scheme
undertaken by the government of free India. It has been
variously described as the ray of hope and happiness for
two-thirds of India’s population, the testament of
emancipation, the declaration of war on poverty, ignorance,
squalor and disease under which millions have been
groaning etc.
ORAL REHYDRATION
Therapy
The Government’s efforts to reduce infant and child
mortality due to diarrheal diseases is been supported by
UNICEF for the production of Oral Rehydration Therapy
(ORT). Since 1986, ORT has become a full-fledged national
program.
PROMOTION OF
IODISED SALTS
Since the 1990s, the government of India, along with
UNICEF and other UN agencies are working together for the
promotion of iodized salt as the best way of preventing
iodine deficiency disorders. They have been promoting it on
a daily basis using advertisements, the internet, awareness
campaigns, etc.
Conclusion
The ultimate objective of UNICEF is to help all the people
who are in dire need of help around the world.

“Helping the child, the youth and the elderly: Social services
for everybody” is the main idea that the UNICEF is built
around.
