CSR IN INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT

The Hewlett-Packard Company, also known as HP or Hewlett-Packard, is a global American

company that specialized in information technology with headquarters in Palo Alto, California. HP
developed and provided a wide variety of hardware components, as well as software and related
services to consumers, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), and large enterprises, including
customers in the government, health, and education sectors. The company was founded in a one-car
garage in Palo Alto by Bill Hewlett and David Packard in 1939, and initially produced a line of electronic
test and measurement equipment. The HP Garage at 367 Addison Avenue is now designated an official
California Historical Landmark and is marked with a plaque calling it the "Birthplace of ‘Silicon Valley’”.

According to Newsweek, an American weekly online news magazine which provides in-depth
analysis, news and opinion about international issues, technology, business culture and politics, they
scored Hewlett-Packard Company an environmental score of 93, social score of 91.1, corporate
governance score of 94.9 and overall score of 93 which gives HP a number 1 in industry rank. Also,
according to 3BL Media, a world leading communication partner for purpose-driven organizations,
ranked HP inc. 4th in their latest 100 best corporate citizens of 2022 with an overall weighted score
of 89.95.

HP’s sustainable impact is divided into three parts namely, climate action, human rights and
digital equality. Firstly, Climate Action is driven towards a net zero carbon, fully regenerative economy
while engineering the industry’s most sustainable portfolio of products and solutions. HP’s carbon
footprint is now 9% lesser than of what it was in 2019 primarily due to reductions related to product use
resulting from increased energy efficiency and changes to the mix of products sold. Also, 54% of the
global electricity consumption which was procured and generated by HP’s global operation during 2021
was from renewable electricity.

Secondly, Human Rights is concerned in creating a powerful culture of diversity, equity and
inclusion. They are also committed to advance human rights, social justice, and racial and gender
equality across the ecosystem, raising the bar for all. Through 2021, HP has reached 349,000 workers in
which 99.2% of employees, including senior executives, completed Integrity at HP training, as well as all
members of the Board of Directors. Women represented 32.5% of director-level and above positions
and represented 22.7% of engineering and technology positions globally. There is also an increase of
2.6% in the Black/African American technical representation in the United States.

Lastly, Digital Equity leads in activating and innovating holistic solutions that break down the
digital divide that prevents many from accessing the education, jobs, and healthcare needed to thrive.
Drive digital inclusion to transform lives and communities. Since 2015, 74.3 million students and adult
learners have benefited from HP’s education programs and solutions that advance quality learning and
digital literacy and enable better learning outcomes. They also reached US$73.4 million in HP
Foundation and employee community giving and served 692,000 employee volunteering hours.

Hewlett-Packard Company does not adhere to CSR only for the sake cost, profit or altruism. For
them, CSR is a source of opportunity, innovation and competitive advantage. It is the new perspective
on how society and business interact that fosters success. Due to the business's application of its
enormous resources, knowledge, and insights to activities that benefit society, it would be a major
driver of social advancement.
