Rationale Statement-Standard #1

Standard # and Title: Standard 1: Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and
development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical
areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences
(“New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers alignment with InTASC,” 2014, p. #1).

Artifact: Observation Report 3

Date of Completion: April 2023
Course Completed in: EDUC 230-01 Education Field Experience

Rationale Statement:
This artifact is based on my service learning classroom. It is a kindergarten classroom with 21
students and 2 teachers. During observation report 3 I focused on the four domains of the child. This is
the first part of a two-part observation report. The goal of this assignment is to focus on a student in the
class and observe when they are development-wise in the four domains. This report is for what I
observed about the student at the beginning of my service learning time. I did a pre-observation based
on the four domains and wrote about the information I found. I then did my observation and
documented what I observed. Afterward, I wrote up an analysis based on the data I collected during my
observation. Finally, I talked about what suggestions I would make and what I learned from this
assignment. This artifact connects with standard 1. Under the performances section it says “ The teacher
regularly assesses individual and group performance in order to design and modify instruction to meet
learners’ needs in each area of development (cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical) and
scaffolds the next level of development” (“New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers alignment
with InTASC,” 2014, p. #2). In this artifact, I had to observe a student and see where they are
developmentally. I then made suggestions to change instruction for the student to help meet the
learners’ needs in development. During my observation time, I saw how the teacher modified their
instruction in order to help the student.
During this assignment, I learned a lot about myself as a prospective educator. I learned more
about the many things a teacher does. A teacher does a lot to help their students succeed. In order to
know what needs to be done they have to learn about the student. The teacher has to figure out where
the student is developmentally and use that information to help the student succeed. I saw part of this
process happen during my observation time. I observed the teacher making a modification for the
student in order to help them complete the assignment. This is an important thing a teacher does. By
being able to evaluate where a student is developmentally and adjust the lesson they make it so the
child can learn and succeed in the class. This is just one of the many things teachers do behind the
scenes for their students.
This artifact can be used in my professional practice. During my pre-observation, I had to do
some research about child development in order to know what to look out for during my observation.
Herbst 2

Due to this, I collected some good resources that I can reference in the future. These resources include a
list of signs to look out for in order to tell where a child is developmentally. If I have a future student that
I see is struggling I can use that list to see where the student falls developmentally so I can decide the
next steps in order to help said student.
