Spring Semester 2023
Rationale Statement-Standard #2

Standard # and Title: 2. Standard Two: Learning Differences

The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and
communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high
standards (“New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers Alignment with InTASC,” 2014,
p.2).

Artifact: Observation Report 1: Context for Learning

Date of Completion: March 24th, 2023 Spring Semester

Course Completed in: EDUC 230-03 Education Field Experience

Rationale Statement:

For my first observation in my 2nd grade field experience placement, I was required
to collaborate with my cooperating teacher to complete the edTPA Context for Learning
form. This form asks a variety of different questions and prompts in three different
categories. The first being “about the school where you are teaching”. The second being
“about the class featured in this assessment”. And third being “about the students in the class
featured in this assessment”. An indicator from New Jersey’s professional standards for
teachers that I feel is best related to this artifact, is within Standard Two: Learning
Differences. This indicator is i. Performances (6) which states that “The teacher accesses
resources, supports, and specialized assistance and services to meet particular learning
differences or needs and participates in the design and implementation of the IEP, where
appropriate through curriculum planning and curricular and instructional modifications,
adaptations and specialized strategies and techniques, including the use of assistive
technology” (“New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers Alignment with InTASC,”
2014, p. 2-3). Throughout observation one, I listed several ways that my cooperating teacher
uses different programs to enhance his students' learning. In addition to this, I discussed how
the students with IEPs or other learning challenges are being helped with various different
instructional methods. All of these points are seen within this indicator.
As a prospective educator, I have seen through this artifact how organized my future
class will have to be in a variety of different ways. This is information that I knew going into
my education major, but after collaborating with my cooperating teacher on this artifact, I
saw first hand how true this is. I learned this information after I was proofreading my
observation artifact. I started to reflect about how organized my cooperating teacher’s days
are. He has a set schedule every day for each subject. In addition to this, he also has to keep
track of his students with IEPs and other learning challenges by making sure they are on
track. Through this reflection, I have realized that I am going to have to be sure to keep my
classroom organized.
Considering what I just mentioned, I know I will use my realizations about this
artifact in my future as a teacher. First and foremost, I know I will have to step up my
organizational habits. I think I can do this by making sure I set up a system to keep myself
and students on track. Especially those with IEPs or other learning challenges. I would like to
do this by setting up a viewable schedule listing the order and how long each subject should
go for. In addition to this, I want to pay special attention to my students who need extra help.
If I can stay organized by doing these things, and more, I think myself and my students will
do great.
