Heliport Facility (Single Rotor Design)

The basic elements of a heliport are clear approach/departure paths, a clear area for ground
manoeuvres, final approach and take-off area (FATO), touchdown and lift-off area (TLOF),
safety area, and a wind cone. Appropriate approach/departure airspace is designated to
allow safe approaches to and departures from landing sites. It is preferred that the
approach/departure path is aligned with the predominant winds.

TLOF = 1 RD of design helicopter

FATO = 1.5D

Safety Area = 1/3 RD

 For ground level heliport, locate the landing and takeoff area away from buildings,
trees, and other large objects that can cause air turbulence and affect helicopter
operations in the vicinity of the FATO and the approach/departure paths.
 For ground base helipads, concrete surface is preferred. For TLOF, helicopter can sink
into asphalt during hot weather causing serious safety hazards.

 For safety purpose, heliport should be equipped with at least one fire extinguisher of
the appropriate type.

 Windsock should be provided to show direction and magnitude of wind (minimum 10-
15 feet above ground)

 If lighting is provided, flood light to be installed at pad level and aimed down to
prevent interference with pilot night vision.
