Introduction

Emotions and thoughts have shaped human nature over the last million of years of
evolution. However, there has always been the dilemma of what matters the most in human life,
is it our emotional side or the rational side? This project will highlight the importance of
emotions and its evolution throughout human history. Our ancestors learnt how to survive by
experiencing new situations and feeling new emotions, that is why nowadays humans have
similar reactions to certain situations. Whether it is love, sadness, fear, or any other emotion, as
time passes by, the human body has learnt how to recognise those feelings and started making
strategies, plans and decisions in order to survive. Hence, the human being is filled with
emotions and rational thoughts, sometimes one is more powerful than the other, but at the end of
the day is what defines us as humans.

What are emotions and how were they created?

Emotions invite us to know what one is thinking, feeling or how one is acting in order to
change our behaviors and/or emotions in the most appropriate way. Likewise, we have an
emotional and rational mind, as for the rational mind, it is associated with the ability to transmit
thoughts in a reasonable way, where we are very aware of things. On the other hand, as for the
emotional mind, it is in charge of feelings, these emotions are a legacy transmitted by our
ancestors through many years of evolution.

During years of evolution in our ancestors, the Neocortex was developed, in charge of the
rational part, pointing out the relationship between thoughts and feelings, which help us make
better decisions and have more assertive behaviors. However, due to the limited relationship that
we find between our emotional and rational parts, on some occasions the limbic brain is capable
of controlling our rationality, having different types of irrational emotional behaviors, such as
wanting to yell, offend or physically harm the people. For this reason, it is vital to have to control
our emotions well, to have a better handling of future problems. Irrational thoughts are expressed
in a demanding way with words like "you have to" "do this" "I need this" etc. These are concepts
of interpreting reality, generating emotional changes in a negative way.

According to the hypothesis of Doctor Paul McLean (medical neuroscientist) the

existence of 3 brains in the human brain is mentioned: The first was the neocortex brain, rational
brain or thinking brain, in charge of making all the logical analyses and intelligent answers of
what it happens in the day to day. The second was the limbic brain or emotional brain, in charge
of all emotions such as happiness, sadness, fear, anger, etc, and it is where many things can be
decided through emotions. Finally, the reptilian brain, the oldest brain of all, is said to be able to
manage the other two brains, it has the ability to react to anything, for example, if someone is
attacking you or disrespecting you, it will you will have an instant reaction of physical harm
towards the other person without thinking or feeling.
Why do we agree on the concept of emotion?

Our position with the development of the brain is something of nature and we agree that
with everything that has been happening over the years, both humans and animals have
developed a more toned brain, that is, they have evolved from one way or another, the thinking
mind of an animal with that of a person is obviously not the same, but each one on their own has
captured their experiences and has focused on them in different ways, many will wonder but
why, we have the simple case of homo sapiens, the evolution of his brain was not because he
wanted it that way, but because he lived an experience, and based on it he developed a system,
that is why he learned to solve it himself, it was not easy but it was achieved, it is the same as
humans, we are rational beings, we think before doing things, but it is not because we have a
built-in chip, it is not that, what happens is that we react according to what happens at the
moment, but it should be noted that with the passage of time that has been accumulating, and we
always ask ourselves something, and we always have the answer, but we never see it.

How does this concept relate to what we have learned in class?

The concept of the class that relates to what is sustained in this project that is based on
the book of emotional intelligence would be ; The language of the leaders and the tones used to
communicate in a work environment, professional and student. On the other hand; we have the
concept of emotions along with the types of leadership within a company. The tones in which we
communicate are related to emotions; that is, if we use a happy tone we want to convey that we
are happy , but if we count our business ideas in a melancholic and negative tone means that we
are sad or depressed by a specific issue.

The concept of emotions is very important to know how to handle situations in which
uncontrollable attitudes appear, using techniques and strategies that allow us to reflect and think
about the best option. It is very important to say that within the labor production area it will
proceed to increase up to 20% when team members correctly use their emotions. The way a
person makes use of their emotions will affect the way other employees behave in the workplace.
The attitudes, character and feelings of an employee of the company has a significant impact on
their work performance, decision-making skills, efficiency and leadership.

Instead of filling our minds with negative thoughts such as that everything goes as you
did not expect, positive emotions consequently affect our brain and increase our awareness,
attention and memory.
Real life examples

Academic setting

“Emma was the leader of one of the teams in her History class, and when the semester
started she was so eager to be the first one in the class. Unexpectedly, the professor chose the
teams randomly and Emma had no other choice than to accept the team she was assigned to.
Weeks passed by and Emma realized that her team members were not as collaborative as she
thought. They started to make excuses for not helping on the homeworks or they did not read any
of her messages. There were two weeks left until the end of the semester when Emma could not
take it anymore and started yelling and swearing at the team members for not being helpful. Her
team members were surprised and scared at the same time because they had no idea how Emma
felt during the whole semester.”

In the story, emotions like anger, fear, anxiety and surprise are shown. Emma was very
enthusiastic about being one of the top of the class and giving her best at homeworks. However,
her team members did not work as hard as her and it seemed like they were not interested in any
of the homeworks. Although Emma’s intentions about passing the course were the best, the way
of showing her anger and disappointment were not the right one. According to Daniel Goleman,
when the body perceives anger, hormones make such a strong energy that the person acts in an
energetic way. In addition, our feelings are sometimes out of control and our body reacts
unconsciously, then when the body calms down, our mind is relaxed and realizes what we did,
hence we regret our actions. The team members after they were yelled at, they became aware of
Emma’s feeling and started working but this time feeling a little bit scared of Emma. Moreover,
Emma could have talked with the members from the beginning of the semester so that they can
get to an agreement on how to work as a group. She could also have given some solutions to the
lack of responsibility in the team. There are so many good ways in which a leader can
communicate and push the team to better teamwork, thus this good attitude and communication
can affect not only the ones that are good at working but also the ones that are not as enthusiastic
as the others.

Business setting

“During the pandemic Mario, Manager of the Ripley Store in San Isidro, had to face
some challenges. The income, the costs and the demand were not the same as before, therefore,
Mario had to reduce the number of staff members. As a leader he communicated this
announcement to the employees through a planned meeting. In this meeting he explained the
tough situation the company was going through and then the purposes of the lay off. Since bad
news was announced to employees, he had to assure them that they will return when the situation
improves. After the lay off, although fired employees felt hopeful about returning to work in the
future, they could not help but feel anxious and worried about the time they wouldn't be
working.”

In this situation we see that the purpose of communication is to inform the employees
about the tough situation Ripley is facing, therefore, Mario as a leader had to make a plan using a
strategy workframe. By planning the type and tools of communication, the bad news won't be as
worrying as it sounds. One of the main objectives is to deliver this news to the employees
keeping them faithful to the company and to inform them about the changes being made for the
wellbeing of the company. It is a fact that receiving unexpected bad news will have a physical
and emotional effect on our bodies. In this sense, this situation not only surprises and scares the
employees but all workers of the company, hence the immediate changes made by Ripley. When
the human body receives an emotion through external signals, prepares the body and starts
thinking of a plan it expresses in an immediate reaction. Regarding the fired employees, we can
identify the emotional and rational sides the human body has. Although the manager tried
persuading them of not being worried about the situation, they cannot help but feel worried.
Their rational side wants them to feel relieved because in the future they will return to work.
However, facing unemployment is not something to feel happy about, for this reason they feel
anxious and concerned.

Conclusions

- Our brain evolves when we respond to emotions or live good or bad experiences, it is like
our brain, and we must bear in mind that our brain has developed in the lower parts.

- Within the workplace of a company and the students within a team work communicate
clearly and concisely making use of their emotions correctly is the best way to increase
efficiency.

- Likewise, our brain has incorporated nuances in emotional life, which means that we can
generate feelings of pleasure, emotions that feed sexual desire, before we were not fit for
it, but over time we have evolved grotesquely.

- People deal with a vast variety of emotions and thoughts on a daily basis, therefore based
on their past experiences and mistakes, their body learns how to react to certain
situations.
