I. RESEARCH TITLE:

“SpeakUP” Development of a Text-to-Speech Web Application for Dyslexic Children

II. RESEARCH SUMMARY

1ST – INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT ABOUT THE TOPIC (discussion about the project about to
develop)

Dyslexia is a common reading disorder that affects many children around the world. It is
characterized by difficulties reading and understanding written text, which can have a significant
impact on a child's ability to learn and succeed in school. To help address this issue, we are
developing a text-to-speech web application called "SpeakUP" that is specifically designed to
assist dyslexic children with reading. This application will use cutting-edge machine learning
algorithms to scan eBooks, PDFs, web pages, and Word documents and turn text into speech. By
providing dyslexic children with a voice to read for them, we hope to improve their reading
comprehension and overall academic performance.

2ND – PROBLEM OR GAP IDENTIFIED (include proofs or evidence that the problem exists)

According to NICHD “National Institute of Child Health and Human Development” Reading
disorders occur when a person has trouble reading words or understanding what they read.
Dyslexia is one type of reading disorder. The study said that Most reading problems are present
from the time a child learns to read. Reading disorders can be very challenging for individuals
who experience them. These disorders can have a significant impact on a person's ability to
learn, communicate, and interact with others. Children with reading disorders may struggle with
a range of reading-related tasks, including decoding written words, fluency in reading, and
comprehension of text. These difficulties can lead to frustration, low self-esteem, and a lack of
confidence in academic and social settings. Therefore, it is essential to identify and address
reading disorders early on to help children achieve their full potential and thrive in their
academic and personal lives.

3rd - REASON FOR CONDUCTING THE STUDY

The development of the SpeakUP text-to-speech web application for dyslexic children is
an innovative and potentially effective solution to address the reading challenges that dyslexic
children face. The use of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) in the application is a key feature
that will allow the system to adapt to the unique needs of each child, providing a more
personalized and effective learning experience. By leveraging the power of RNNs, we aim to
improve the accuracy of the text-to-speech conversion and enhance the overall reading
experience for dyslexic children.

4TH – PERCEIVED SOLUTION

The SpeakUP text-to-speech web application for dyslexic children is a customizable and
accessible solution that aims to improve reading comprehension and academic performance for
dyslexic children. By providing a voice to read for them, dyslexic children can better understand
written text and engage more meaningfully with the learning materials. The use of RNNs in the
system ensures a more accurate and personalized experience, which can lead to greater success
in reading and academic achievement.

III. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A. General Statement of the Problem

Dyslexia is a prevalent reading disorder that impacts a considerable number of

children worldwide, causing significant difficulties in reading and comprehending
written text.

B. Specific statement of the problem

i. How can the system effectively convert written text to speech using RNN
algorithm?
ii. How will the system ensure accuracy in the conversion of text to speech for
different types of dyslexic learners?
iii. How can the system be designed to be user-friendly and accessible for dyslexic
children with varying levels of technological proficiency?
iv. How can the system be optimized to meet the unique needs and preferences of
individual dyslexic learners, such as varying reading speeds and pronunciation
preferences?
