Dear Sir/Ma’am,

Greetings!

We, the 3rd year BSN3-G students of Iloilo Doctors’ College will conduct a research study entitled “The
Correlation between the Intensive Nursing Care Practicum Program Clinical Exposure and Perceived
Clinical Care Competence of Fourth-Year Student Nurses at Iloilo Doctors’ College”. The aim of this
study is to identify the correlation between the variables mentioned above. A cited survey questionnaire
will be used to conduct this study.

Also, we, the researchers, are humbly asking for your approval to validate the attached survey
questionnaire using the validation rating score sheet. The researchers will utilize the result as a guide
before doing the pilot testing.

The researchers are looking forward that you will grant their request after careful consideration.

Thank you and God bless.

Respectfully yours,

Bustillo, Clint Andrew C.

A. Statement of the Problem

Clinical exposure is the beginning of a learning process for students that last throughout their
education and nursing profession. Clinical experience enables students to gain real-life experiences, and
apply theories they learned into practice, this is where they develop their competencies and prepare and
stimulate their clinical judgment and expertise (Yamamoto et. al., 2017). Multiple studies show that
having less exposure to actual patients, and their diagnoses, may affect the trainees' future care of actual
clients (Balvardi et. al, 2022; Yamamoto et. al., 2017; Lindquist et. al, 2010; Malangoni et. al., 2005).
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order # 15, Article V, section 9,
table IV mentions that 408 contact hours are required before graduating from the BSN program in the
Philippines. However, there is limited evidence showing whether the clinical exposure substantially
improves the perceived level of competence among nursing students in the country. As a response, this
study is to determine whether there is a correlation between the Intensive Nursing Practicum Clinical
exposure and the level of perceived competency among graduating BSN students of Iloilo Doctors
College batch 2022-23.

B. Overall aim and Specific objectives

Overall Aim
The aim of this study is to identify the correlation between the Intensive Nursing Practicum
Program Clinical Exposure and the Perceived Clinical Care Competence of Fourth Year Student Nurses at
Iloilo Doctors’ College.

Specific Objectives
● Determine the total number of hours in Intensive Nursing Practicum Program received by the
BSN 4th year students of Iloilo Doctors’ College as a whole, and when clustered according to:
○ Age;
○ Gender;
○ Monthly income of family;
○ Total number of practicum hours; and
○ Type of learning environment
● Determine the perceived level of competence of BSN 4th year students of Iloilo Doctors’
College; and
● Determine the extent of correlation between the Intensive Nursing Practicum Clinical Exposure
and perceived level of competence among BSN 4th year students of Iloilo Doctors’ College.

C. Research Framework
This study is based from Social Cognitive Learning Theory (SCLT) by Albert Bandura in 1986
which postulated that learning was governed by the aspects of attention, retention, production, and
motivation. A study by Katowa-Mukwato and colleagues (2014) supports that repetitive practice can
ILOILO DOCTORS’ COLLEGE
College of Nursing
West Ave., Molo. Iloilo City

build confidence among students. As mentioned, the four components of social cognitive theory are
applied during clinical exposure for nursing care practicum. Nursing students focus their attention as they
observe actual nursing care while being guided by their instructors and where retention was a factor.
Reproduction occurs when student nurses perform what they saw while they are hands-on in a clinical
setting as part of their nursing care practicum. Every nursing student's willingness to watch, learn, and
practice is then driven by motivation.

Figure 1. The Correlation between the Intensive Nursing Practicum Program Clinical Exposure to the
Perceived Clinical Care Competence

Figure 1, shows the relationship of variables in which independent variables, Intensive Nursing Practicum
Program Clinical exposure, affects the dependent variable, perceived level of competence. Differences in
the perceived level of competence of the students are conceptualized in terms of their demographics such
as students' age, gender, monthly income of the family, the total number of practicum hours, and the type
of learning environment. Students' perceived competence, measured using the five factors, is influenced
by the students’ attention to procedures, retention of ideas, reproduction of action, and motivation to
pursue as well as the demographic profile of the respondents. The higher these four elements are
observed, the more learning they acquire and the higher the competence they perceive when governed by
the SCLT aspects.

VALIDATION OF SURVEY INSTRUMENT SURVEY FORM

Using the criteria developed for evaluating survey questionnaires set forth by y Carter V. Good and
Douglas B. Scates, please evaluate the attached researchers’ made survey instrument for the proposed
study (Rating 1 as poor and 5 as excellent, kindly check the respective boxes below).

Criteria for Validity 1 2 3 4 5

1. The questionnaire is short enough and respondents

respect it and would not drain much of their precious
time.

2. The questionnaire is interesting and has a face appeal-

such that respondents will be induced to respond to it
and accomplish fully.

3. The questionnaire can obtain some depth to respondents

and avoid superficial answers.

4. The items/questions end their alternative responses that

are not too suggestive and not too stimulating.

5. The questionnaire can elicit responses which are not

definite but not mechanically forced.

6. Questions/items are stated in such a way that the

responses will not be embarrassing to the
person/persons concerned.

7. Questions/items are formed in such a manner as to

avoid suspicion on the part of the respondents

8. The questionnaire is not too narrow nor restrictive nor

limited in its philosophy.

9. The responses to the questionnaire when taken as a

whole could answer the basic purpose for which the
questionnaire is designed and therefore considered
valid.
