Course Description:
This course is a study of major myths and folklore of various cultures around
the world. It is designed to give students an exposure to different mythological and
folk narratives from different countries to gain deeper insights into the nature of
human beings, their origin, their desires, their fears, their instincts, and their needs, in
general and in the different cultural patterns of countries.
1. compare and contrast myths from different times and places, identifying
where they occur, universal mythic patterns and character types;
2. recognize mythic allusions in art, literature, drama, and film;
3. analyze specific myths or bodies of myths with regard to function, specifying
which portions of a particular story perform which functions; and
4. harmonize the knowledge of excellent instruction of a true NOrSUnian with
the core values of SAPPHIRE (4.3.1.1) needed to become dynamic,
competitive, and globally responsive (4.1.1.1).
