INTRODUCTION National Highway Authority of India has awarded the work for 'Six laning & strengthening of new NH-248A from exis ‘km 2+740 (Rajiv chowk) to km 11+682 (Gurgaon) under NHDP phase IV on Hybrid annuity mode in the State of Haryana’ to contractor M/S Oriental Structural Engineers Pvt. Ltd. Contractor has engaged M/s B&S Engineering Consultants Pvt. Ltd. for preparing the detail design and drawing of this project. ‘This design note contains the design of roof structure and its connections for Overpass at Ch, 1+905. The roof structure will be Steel structure consisting of three main components : (@) Purlins (b) Tubular truss (© Supporting columns ‘There are in total of 209 locations where columns are provided, Calculations of heights are shown in subsequent pages ‘The primary loads used in the design of this roof structure are Dead Load, Live Load, Wind Load and Temperature load. Purlins are designed as simply supported members which are spanning over truss. The purlin length works out to be 4m. The spacing of purlins is kept as 1.5m c/c, Loads used in the design of purlin are: (a) Dead load which consists of self weight of purlin and weight of roof sheeting whic! (©) Live load of 0.0752 (ie. Live load on inaccessible roof as per IS : 875 (Part 2)) (©) Wind load calculated as per IS 875 (Part 3) which is presented in detail in the design note. ‘assumed as 2.55kg/m2. ‘This roof structure is idealised as a portal with Truss in STAAD Pro. Two models are made, one with shortest height & other ‘with tallest height. Each member is designed for critical forces obtained from such two models. The Tubular truss is modeled in Staad space by releasing the moments at the edges of all truss members . The support condition at the base of end Column is considered as partial fixed (30% fixity at supports) ‘The loads applied in this model are as follows: (@) DL: Self weight ofthe truss and columns (6) Load of Puriins whichis applied as Concentrated load at a spacing of 1.5m o/c. In one ease, wind is considered to act vertically downward which adds to the self weight and weight of sheeting. In another case, wind is supposed to act vertically. upward which will counteract tothe weight of sheeting and self weight ofthe purtin (Wind load is applied by considering intemal pressure coefficient as +0.7-0.7. The cofficients on the windward and leeward side of structure are taken from IS 875 (Part 3). Due to curved roof, additional wind force cases are considered in accordance with cl 73.3.6 of IS 875. In which, part of the curved roof is subjected to external pressure & part as suction pressure. Two such cases are considered.The calculations for all cases are presented in the design note, Combinations of various loads (As per IRC 6:2017) is done in stad pro. ‘The design forces for truss and roof column are taken from the model. Roof column is designed as a member subjected to axial compression, shear and bending simultancously.Tubular truss members are designed as a member subjected to axial tenison and/or compression, For the design of connections at both top and bottom of column section, forces and moments are taken from STAAD model.
