Compass-a device containing a magnet that is
used for finding directions.

North Pole- the pole of the magnet that points


north. A North Pole repels another North Pole

South Pole- the pole of a magnet that points


south. A South Pole repels another South Pole.

How do compasses work?

Magnetic compasses work because the Earth


behaves as if there was a large bar magnet
inside it. The North Pole of the compass orients
itself so it points very close to the geographic
North Pole of the Earth.
