Additional facts
General objectives:
1. Learners will come to know the facts and principles of science and its
applications, consistent with the stage of cognitive development.
2. Learners will be able to acquire the skills and understand the methods and
processes that lead to generation and validation of scientific knowledge.
3. Learners will be able to develop a historical and developmental perspective
of science and to enable her to view science as social enterprise.
4. Learners will be able to relate to the (natural environment, artifacts and
people), local as well as global and appreciate the issues at the interface of
science, technology and society.
5. Learners will acquire the requisite theoretical knowledge and practical
technological skills to enter the world of work.
6. Learners will nurture the natural curiosity, aesthetic sense and creativity in
science and technology.
7. Learners will imbibe the values of honesty, integrity, cooperation, concern
for life and preservation of environment,
8. It will cultivate ‘scientific temper’- objectivity, critical thinking and freedom
from fear from prejudice.
Specific Objective
The student will be able to:
Describe the properties of magnet.
Define compass
Describe the mechanism of a compass.
Explain earth’s magnetic effect.
Differentiate attraction and repulsion of the magnet.
Previous Knowledge
The students should be able to:
Define Magnet
recall the basic functions of a magnet.
Recall the materials those are attracted to magnet
List few uses of magnet.
Introduction: -
Q- As we discussed in our previous classes, what happens when we
bring two magnets closer?
EA- It may repel or attract each other.
Q- What are these situations when they repel or attracts?
EA- When like poles of the magnets comes closer, they repel and when
unlike poles brought together, they attract towards each other.
Q- So, how we decide poles in a magnet?
EA- The way they arrange itself when they are hanged freely, If one side
of the magnet is arranged toward the Geographical north then that side
will be assumed as the north pole of the magnet and vice versa.
Q- So, now assume earth as a large bar magnet what will be its poles?
EA- Magnetic poles of the earth will be opposite to its geographical
poles.

aids
1. Properties of PPT, Photos, Q- Reflecting on whatever we have
magnet Animations studied till now what are the
properties that a magnet has?
Summary-
Magnet attracts ferromagnetic
materials like iron, cobalt, and
nickel.
Like poles of the magnet repel
each other and unlike poles
attract each other.
A freely suspended magnet
always points in a north-south
direction.
Magnets have two poles,
where the strength of the
magnetic field is the strongest.
Magnetic poles exist in pairs.
No matter how small a magnet
is, it is impossible to separate
one pole..
2. Earth as a Summary-
magnet Explanation, Ppt,
photos, from there Earth itself behaves like a huge bar
experiences, magnet with its magnetic poles near
Activity the geographical north and south
poles. The south pole of this bar
magnet is near the geographical
north pole and north pole at the
geographical south pole. Therefore,
when a magnet is suspended freely,
the magnetic poles of the earth
attract the opposite poles of the
magnet and the magnet comes to
rest in the north-south direction.
Summary-
A compass is a device with a
magnetized needle pivoted inside a
box covered by glass, which points
to the direction of north and is a
useful tool for finding directions it
aligns itself towards the
geographical north pole and south
pole of the earth.
Activity
Summary-
Magnetic property loses when
a magnet is drooped from
heights.
Magnetic property loses when
a magnet is heated up.
Magnetic property loses when
a magnet is hammered
Summary
If a magnet is left to itself over a
long period of time it gets
demagnetized, i.e. it loses its
magnetic property. To avoid this,
when not in use, magnets are stored
between soft iron pieces called
keepers. To protect magnets from
demagnetization, bar magnets are
arranged in pairs with their opposite
poles facing each other and two soft
iron pieces are placed at the two
ends of the pair of magnets.
Recap-
Q- You are given two rods. Out of these, one is an iron rod and the
other one is magnet, how will you identify these rods?
Home Work
Q- Try making a compass at your home it should
contain a needle which should be magnetized by
you.
