TOPIC: POLLUTION OF AIR AND WATER

SUB-TOPIC: POLLUTION OF AIR

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

 To promote understanding of basic principles in Chemistry while retaining the


excitement in Chemistry.
 To develop positive scientific attitude, and appreciate contribution of Chemistry
towards the improvement of quality of human life.
 To develop problem solving skills and nurture curiosity in students.
 To inculcate values of honesty, integrity, cooperation, concern for life and
preservation of the environment.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:

 Recall pollution
 Define air pollution.
 Explain the causes of air pollution
 State the names of different air pollutants.
 Describe the harmful effects of air pollution.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Students are familiar with concept of pollution, types of


pollution.

TEACHING AIDS: AV Module, pictures on air pollution

INTRODUCTION: Teacher does a brainstorming session with students by asking following


questions after showing short videos on air pollution.

 What do you mean by pollution?


 Do you know about the different types of pollution?
 What are the causes of pollution?
 What are the effects of pollution on our health and environment?
Students answer the questions.
PRESENTATION:

Teacher divides the class into 6 groups and each group is given a picture. Based on the picture
the groups asked to discuss :

-what the pollutants are

- where the pollutants come from

- what harm the pollutants cause

Students are asked to share their observations.

Later, each group is given a task to discuss what are air pollutants that effect, what are sources of
air pollutants, the effects of air pollution within 10 minutes

Each group will study and discuss as the following below:

Group 1 – forest
Group 2 – animals

Group 3 – people

Group 4 – crops

Group 5 – rivers

Group 6 - lakes

Each group is asked to present their discussion in front of the class.

Content: Air pollutants are any visible or invisible substances in the atmosphere that pose a
threat to human health or the environment. They can come from human and natural sources.
Examples of air pollutants include smoke, toxic acid, dust, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and
pesticides.

RECAPITULATION:

 What is pollution?
 Define air pollution.
 State the names of air pollutants.
 What are the causes of air pollution?
 How air pollution affects us?

HOME ASSIGNMENTS:

 Find out the reasons why every year Delhi city experiences very poor air quality during
winters.
