The Gamble

Every member of the LGBTQ+ community could do an act that may change their life: coming out. It
is an act of announcing to a person or a group of people about one’s gender and sexuality. From
different perspectives, it could be seen as a celebration, an unheard whisper, or even as profanity.

Filipinos does not reject nor accept the community as a whole. There is tolerance. There are a lot of
variables.

To learn how to gamble, one must first see what is in play.

The Filipino entertainment usually sees the community as comedic. When person acts like the
opposite sex, it could be seen as funny because that’s not how one should act. When a homosexual
character tries to flirt, it could be seen as [weird] because it is

When I encountered the ins and outs of this gamble, I asked myself if it is necessary to do it? Should
anyone of the LGBTQ+ community come out at some point, or is it optional?

Coming out is a gamble where relationships with people you cherish are at stake. The jackpot is
acceptance, and the consolation prize is tolerance. No matter how much you want to bet, may the odds
be ever in your favor.
