Introduction of the Study
Fearsome typhoons, volcanic eruptions and strong earthquakes. These are the
three of the natural phenomena that regularly visit residents of the Philippines. But year
2019 pandemic occurs. This pandemic causes a lot of changes in our lives specially our
daily living and until now pandemic occurs but it is invisible in our eyes. Our country is
currently facing very tough times. The inception of the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-
19) which is now a pandemic has generated a lot of fear and anxiety towards the
community. In order to keep everyone safe against this pandemic, the government made
some arrangements and implemented different actions to fight the virus. An enhanced
community quarantine was implemented to make sure that each and every individual will
stay at their home and keep them from getting infected by the virus. Some
establishments and businesses were temporarily closed due to the effect of COVID-19.
The economy of the country had suffered greatly because of this. A lot of individuals
were forced to leave their job temporarily since the companies that they are working for
had been also forced to stop their operation.Because of this, a lot of us do not have the
means to provide food and other basic needs for our family. Other people who are not
financially stable are having a hard time providing the daily needs of the family. That is
why it is why disaster relief operation is very important to ensure the well-being of the
community every time there is a disaster or emergency. Providing relief goods should be
done as fast as possible since humans can only survive without food and water for a
period of time.It is crucial to provide and circulate relief goods to the areas that are
affected so that they will be able to cope up during these troubled times. This will act as
an additional aid or support for every family that is currently suffering from this pandemic
especially now that the community is on a quarantine where only a limited person is
allowed to go outside the community.Another important thing during relief goods
operation is to make sure that all of the basic necessities and essential goods are
properly packed. It is necessary to keep the highly perishable goods to be well
preserved while they are being delivered to the affected area.

Nowadays, canned foods are the most popular grocery items not only in the
Philippines but also in different countries all around the world. Canned foods are more
convenient compared to frozen foods, especially for transportation and storage. It usually
contains preservatives and other chemicals to prolong the life of foods for long periods of
time. During the pandemic the people can’t get out with no quarantine pass. For those
people who lose their job they are the one who need our help. Some people create a
community pantry which you can what you need but not too much you can also donate if
you have an extra. Some of the food donated was canned goods because it can last
longer than meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and other fresh foods. Canning is a method of
preserving foods for long periods by packing them in airtight containers. Canning was first
developed in the late 18th century as a way to provide a stable food source for calamities,
soldiers and sailors at war.Canned foods are fresh products that have been cooked,
sterilized and placed in hermetically sealed containers to keep their properties for a longer
time. They receive a heat treatment that destroys any microorganism without affecting the
nutritional values of the food. The production process of canned food allows its storage at
room temperature up to 5 years. This is one of the reasons why these products are so
demanded. The quality guarantee that they offer over time allows those who have them in
their kitchens or restaurants to offer their customers a first-class product at a lower cost
than fresh products.Canned products do not need refrigeration so they are easier to store,
and the container that protects them, the can, can be stacked one on top of the other,
making it easy to store.
Literature Review

Nutrients are chemical substances found in every living thing on Earth. They

are necessary to the lives of people, plants, animals, and all other organisms. Nutrients
help break down food to give organisms energy. They are used in every process of an
organism’s body. Some of the processes are growth (building cells), repair (healing a
wound), and maintaining life (breathing). Plants and other autotroph absorb nutrients
from soil and water. Autotroph are organisms that can make their own food. The most
important nutrients they need are carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Other nutrients needed
by plants are nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. From
these basic nutrients, plants and other autotroph synthesize, or create, their own nutrients,
such as sugars. The human body can also synthesize some nutrients, such as amino
acids. However, most organisms need nutrients created by autotroph. People and animals
get most of their nutrients from food. Essential nutrients are nutrients that the human body
is unable to synthesize. They must be obtained from food or water. Essential nutrients
include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals.Carbohydrates, proteins, and
fats are all part of a group of essential nutrients called macro nutrients. “Macro-” means
large, and these are the nutrients humans need in the largest amounts. Foods that are
high in macro nutrients include potatoes, which are high in carbohydrates; nuts, which are
high in proteins; and avocados, which are high in fats.

Each macro nutrient supplies a specific amount of energy. We know how much

energy is in a kind of food by how many calories it has. A calorie is a unit of energy. Think
of calories like gallons of fuel in a tank: If your car can go 20 kilometers by using one gallon
of fuel and you are taking a 40-kilometer trip, you know that you need two gallons of fuel.
Calories are fuel in the human body.Vitamins and minerals are part of a group of essential
nutrients called micro nutrients. “Micro-” means small; humans need micro nutrients in
small amounts. Vitamins have names like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin D. Vitamins
contain the element carbon, which means they are organic compounds. Minerals, such as
calcium and iron, come from the earth or environment. Minerals do not contain carbon,
meaning they are inorganic compounds.Nutrients such as carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen
make all life possible. Nutrient-poor areas cannot support much biodiversity. Bogs, for
instance, are nutrient-poor wetlands found in cool climates. The soil of bogs is much
more acidic than fertile, or nutrient-rich, soil. Few species of plants can grow in the
nutrient-poor soil of bogs. With fewer species of plants available, the ecosystem is unable
to support a large variety of other organisms, such as animals and fungi. "It is perfectly fine
for us to rely on canned fruits and vegetables as forms of produce in our day-to-day lives,"
says Holden, but when looking for healthy options, Holden recommends that you read the
labels to check the percent sodium and added sugar. "If it says 20% or above per serving,
it is a high source, and it might help to find a product with less," she says.Canned foods
are a nutritious option and could especially help you increase your intake of fruit and
vegetables since they remain edible for longer and can be more cost-effective for
consumers.  Just remember that single food sources of canned goods are generally better
than prepared canned meals due to their typical high sodium and sugar levels. Keep an
eye on your labels to ensure a healthy choice.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify how the canned goods give nutrients and energy to the
victims of calamities, wherein it is evident that canned goods actually give nutrients and
energy to the human being and either have bad or good effects.

This study aims to answer these questions:

1. What nutrients can canned goods have?

2. How can canned goods provide nutrients to people?
3. Is canned food easy to make?
4. How long can canned goods be preserved?
5. Is canned food good for our health?

Discussion

Canned foods are often thought to be less nutritious than fresh or frozen foods, but
research shows that this is not always true. In fact, canning preserves most of a food’s
nutrients. Protein, carbs, and fat are unaffected by the process. Most minerals and fat-
soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K are also retained. Canned foods are a
convenient and practical way to add more nutrient-dense foods to your diet. Canned foods
are an easy and cheap way to add some nutrition to your diet. Nearly every kind of
vegetable and fruit is available in a variety of cans at whatever grocery store you walk into,
but not all canned foods are made the same. That's why it's important to note the side
effects it can have on your body when you eat canned foods. Some canned items may be
filled with health benefits, while others might not be the best choice to put in your
body because they are packed with sugar and salt to help preserve them. Canned foods
can be a good source of several nutrients, but even without adding any extra salt to them,
they can also be a source of extra sodium.

According to Megan Byrd, RD, of The Oregon Dietitian, many foods are canned with extra
sodium to help preserve them during the canning process. This excess sodium can have
negative health impacts, especially for people who already suffer from high blood pressure
or heart disease. "Eating excess salt when you have heart conditions may make your
symptoms and disease process worse," Byrd says. "If you are trying to watch your salt
intake and would prefer to eat canned vegetables and beans, the best option would be to
rinse them thoroughly before you eat them. Doing so removes a lot of the salt from the
canned foods, making them a little healthier." The benefit of canned food items is how long
they can last. The long-lasting items are beneficial because they help eliminate food waste,
but they're built to last for so much longer than non-canned foods because they're packed
with preservatives. Jay Cowin, a registered nutritionist and director of formulations at
ASYSTEM, said that it's important to check out which canned food items are healthier than
others in terms of what they're preserved in.

Pick foods that have less sodium and no added sugars," says Cowin. "Fruits should be
packed in their own juices and not syrup, and canned tuna and chicken will be healthier for
you if you choose options that do not contain oil." Canned foods — you either love them or
you hate them. They often get a bad rap due to their history with BPA-lined tins or because
they're high in sodium (both true), but there are some redeeming qualities—both in terms
of ease of cooking and health benefits—to this pantry staple. Nutritionally speaking, many
canned foods are minimally processed beyond the canning process and are generally
healthy foods: tomatoes, beans, vegetables, and fish. Combine the healthfulness of these
foods with their convenience and affordability, and you have the perfect addition to a
healthy diet. Canned chicken is very low in fat but high in protein, calcium, and vitamin D.
Canned fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids,
which may reduce heart disease risk. Due to the presence of preservatives, canned foods
can contain an unhealthy amount of salt and sugar, which may be unsafe for the body, and
their regular consumption increases the risk of developing obesity, heart issues, diabetes,
and hypertension. A chemical known as bisphenol-A (BPA) is used in the packing of food.
It has been linked to the risk of developing cardiovascular and other health issues. Canned
foods may contain BPA, thereby causing harm to the body with regular consumption. While
we know that canned foods may be a good option in some instances because they serve
their purpose well, namely, making people's lives easier, we cannot ignore the
shortcomings that come along with them. Food is essential for the body to function
efficiently, and the wrong food choices may lead to an unhealthy body. Therefore, it is
advised not to make the consumption of canned foods a habit and work towards
maintaining a balance between freshly home-cooked food and canned foods. This will not
only help keep the body healthy but will also save you from falling into the trap of a
monotonous and unhealthy diet routine.

Conclusion

I conclude that, upon gathering data from the web and my own experience,
canned food can really surpass our hunger during any kind of calamity, as canned goods
can last up to five years depending on their preservatives. Canned foods are a convenient
and practical way to add more nutrient-dense foods to your diet, but it is important to note
the side effects they can have on your body. Some canned items may be filled with health
benefits, while others may be packed with sugar and salt to preserve them. Canning goods
are very affordable and convenient to store. A canned good also has many nutrients that it
can provide to the body. It is also very convenient during disasters because it is very easy
to cook, but some other canned goods don't need cooking. On the other hand, it can be
easily prepared and ready to eat in terms of any calamities. Though sometimes it has bad
effects on our body when we eat too much, it has a lot of nutrients and is good for our
health.
