Jeremy Jackson
Overall Experience
My name is Jeremy Jackson and I recently was about to work with the Winston Salem State
University Athletic Department under Ms. April Reid from February 9th 2023- April 29th 2023.
During my time I was able to behind the scenes the hard work it takes to run a successful athletic
program. My experience was created from many different sports that are offered here at Winston
Salem State University. From basketball, track and field, tennis, softball and football I was put
in unique positions I have never been to before. And also a part of a group to plan out the annual
athletes banquet was able to work at different sports venues sites.which brought on a different
atmosphere and experience. With each sport brought on a different task during basketball
From Tennis making the net wasn;t ripped in any way. If so, knowing how to change and
replace the net before a match. Softball making sure the field had the necessary lines from the
baselines to the batter boxes. Football puts the equipment out for the players for instance pads,
helmets, cleats and jerseys. Standing by during practice in case a player had an equipment
malfunction. During our planning process of the banquet we discussed how we envisioned and
What I learned during my time with Ms. April is how to multitask better at one time. Ms
April wears many different hats and sometimes they overlap. The main thing she told me was to
stay calm and always have a plan ready. Another thing I learned was how to update stats during
and after the game. During basketball season how to pull out the bleachers and how to operate
the scoreboard and shot clock. I learned how to properly set up a football locker. Also fixing
many different sports equipment like helmets, nets and pads. Softball I was taught how to draw
An area where I had personal growth was having more patience. When I would do the
giveaways I thought it would take a certain amount of time but I couldn't be mad because I had a
task to complete. Where I grew professional was better teamwork. The job will be easier if you
have a group of people helping you. One area that was challenging for me was problem solving
skills. The main reason why I think this was challenging to me was that I didn't have as much
experience as everybody else. Some insight I gained is that sports are unpredictable and it is
important to be prepared for any situation. Another key insight is that everyday will be different.
A skill I would like to take into my internship is being a more vocal leader. I would say I
lead by example but that sometimes some people will not understand and sometimes I need to
use my voice to get the point across. This field experience will influence my future goals by
giving me a better sense of the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in my future
career. I want to be a men’s head basketball coach. During my field experience I learned how to
better communicate with a group and also be patient. Sometimes the team won’t understand what
I’m trying to say the first time. It might take 4 times before they understand it.

My field experience exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed my time with Ms. April because
everyday was different. I would give myself a 8/10 when I was given a task. I tried to complete it
to the best of my abilities. The only thing I want to improve during my internship is my problem
solving skills. I would definitely recommend the athletic department to future students. They will
Me and Ms April project was to bring in local high school football students to our spring
football game. Since I am from Winston-Salem myself I know it is hard to get recruited out of
Winston-Salem compared to Charlotte. This way these athletes can get exposure to college
players and athletes asking them questions. My role was to get in touch with the local high
school football coaches giving their team an invitation to our spring football game. We were able
