Personal Achievement

Alvin Jung
DESCRIPTION

A personal achievement that I am proud of is making the Cloverdale College Prep Baseball Team.
I have played baseball in Cloverdale since I was 9 years old and ever since then I have watched the older
kids on the College Prep Team play baseball on their field. I have always thought to myself as a kid,
“Maybe when I get older, I can play for that team with all my friends” and it became true. I worked and
trained hard to get better every day. I did special 1 on 1 training, worked out in the gym 6 days a week
to become more physically fit, and also went to Team British Columbia Select baseball camps to practice
and play with the best players my age in BC. I also broke my leg in grade 10 and hurt my shoulder in
grade 11 needing surgery for both. My body is finally 100% healthy after a long 2 years and can’t wait for
the season (hopefully COVID will be gone before).

PERSONAL RELEVENCY

This team is very special to me because I’ve played with some of my teammates since I was 12
years old. We have been through a lot together over the years. Puking from all the running, getting in
trouble together at a hotel in Arizona, and shared a lot of adrenaline pumping moments in provincial
championships. Baseball is also my passion and a way for me to relieve stress and it’s never a dull
moment with my teammates there. They’re almost like family or brothers that I never knew I had
because I am an only child.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

I have learned, improved and practiced a lot of skills through baseball that I could connect to
real life situations. First skill I learned is teamwork; baseball is filled with defensive plays that involves
teamwork and this skill I achieved can help me a lot in the future. For an example, a ball could be hit as a
grounder with a runner on first and that could be played as a double play which involves 3 players to
coordinate together. I also learned to be mentally strong through baseball because if you strike out in
baseball, it could really mess with your head and get you pissed off. However, I have learned that if I
strike out, I need to have short memory and forget so that I could focus on getting a hit next at-bat. Now
I am the senior of the team because I am in grade 12 and the team consists of grade 10-12. I have also
learned to

SELF-AWARENESS

I learned a lot about myself playing this sport. I need to improve on not getting nervous when
I’m in an important situation like batting. I also get in my head a lot and overthink about things in the
past that I should forget. I’m also shorter than your average guy so in order for me to maintain my spot
as a starter on the team I need to work extra harder on somethings else than other guys on my team
that have better physical attributes than me. A strength that I have is that I play the game smart and
think about the play before it happens. My effort is always at a 100% and my coaches take notice and
know that I come to practice wanting to be there. My motivation of getting better comes from my
teammates because we have a competitive rivalry against each other on who can throw harder or hit
further. They drive me to train harder.
FUTURE CONNECTIONS

I plan to join the military and this experience will help me in a few different ways. I learned a
skill called teamwork and I’m guessing that the military will need lots of teamwork to do training
because it is all about backing up your subordinates. Playing baseball will also help me get physically fit
before I join the military. I think that I will also have remember to be mentally strong because I am
expecting lots of hard training in the military.
