Why do we experience things? Our lesson on hermeneutic phenomenology began
with us reflecting on the meaning of conscious experience. While the natural
sciences study objects and events in the world, phenomenology, on the other
hand, studies how we relate to the world on an individual and existential level.

Hermeneutics, which is the study of interpretation, helps us understand the meaning

behind our experiences by analyzing what we say or write. We can also apply
principles from hermeneutics and phenomenology to have a greater understanding of
the world as we perceive it . This means two things: (1) we can understand the
world by reflecting on our experiences (or ask someone to share their experiences),
and (2) we can find meaning in interpreting our reflections . These two aspects are
key to understanding why hermeneutic phenomenology is an effective qualitative approach
used by researchers to understand the world.
