Not the first actually. There is a redone version of Tyranny of Dragons, one book combining
Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat

I think the anthology model is a fantastic evolution and hybrid option for games, mixing some
of the best parts of one shots and campaigns. Looking forward to alternatively viewing this.

Me too. It's great to drop into my homebrew world. Too bad I won't be paying for this
book, it looks like something I'd really like to use.

Yeah spelljammer put me off any WotC books even before the OGL scandal. Meanwhile I'm
reading the excellent Book of Ebon Tides from Kobold Press. I paid full price, and I'm still happy
despite it being available on humble bundle. Do yourself a favor and go to Humble Bundle or
Bundle of Holding. For much less you'll get couple of better books no matter which bundle you
buy.

Spelljammer was such a huge fail, even without the Hadozee debacle.
Obvious last-minute cuts and alterations that had to be made to the adventure (the WizKids
setpiece encounter has a third royal astral elf that doesn't exist in the adventure)
The complete lack of direction on some stuff like the section "making your own Wildspace system:
look at the two we made in the adventure and do that."
Monsters with big design holes- some of them are supposed to combo with themselves, but they
lack the ability to do so.
I'm sure WizKids was pissed too. They put out a whole line of minis for ship-scale combat, and
then WotC published the books without rules for them!
There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that suggests that Spelljammer was being worked on
by a bunch of folks at the start, and then were pulled off for another project (dragonlance
being the most likely). The remaining folks had to scramble to make a printable product.
I bought the product, but that was my mistake, I would not recommend it to anyone looking
for a quality, completed product that can stand on its own.
The best thing to come out of the release, besides drawing attention to the setting, was the
free album that they put out. I really like The majority of the songs there.

An extra astral elf that isn't in the adventure with the set? Thats interesting, do they have a
name or just ended up on the cutting room floor and aren't discernable from royal
guards/other aristocrats?

Yeah makes me wonder what was gonna be the adventure etc before they had to
cut it all up to get it in an ok enough shape to ship out.
2 Reply Share
Maybe he would be some sort of foil to the mess that is the 3 noble Astral
Elves you supposed to interact with, or just another antagonist to show how
ruthless Astral Elves are portrayed...

Honestly the Hadozee seem like a tempest in a tea pot as the picture of them ran from
white to black. I mean if you want to address racism there is the issue that both elves and
dwarves have evil versions that are dark skinned. Also there are lots of formerly enslaved
races like the Gith. The whole Hadozee thing seemed like virtue signaling in place of
addressing D&D historical skin color issues.
It just pisses me off that suddenly everything Star Frontiers is now wrapped up in scandal,
which was my 1st real RPG back in the day.
But in terms of quality I agree and I think they put it in a boxed set so it was harder for
people to take a lot at it in the store.

The Hadozee reaction bore mentioning, but it was one line in paragraphs of complaints
and examples. The product is filled with holes and was clearly fixed up and shipped out
without enough time. WotC knowingly forced a VERY unfinished product out.

Kender were the new race option (sigh) yet in the adventure it's Tinker Gnomes who stand out
as the most memorable part.
Oh, and instead of mass combat rules for 5e, every time the adventure reaches a point where
armies fight, the damn book says "Get your copy of the new board game (only $70) and have
you players play through scenario #5. If they win, give them this magic item as a reward."
Yeah, the pass off mass combat to a second fucking product that they charged $70 for.

Running LoX right now and while I like the overarching story, it’s bullshit how much it lays at
the feat of the DM. It also creates a ton of issues it has no interest in solving, like a pack of
thugs the party has to share a ship with.

You don't see many heist-based Call of Cthulhu scenarios! I'm excited!

In Call of Cthulhu, the item is a book, and the heist functions in reverse. Everybody is breaking
into each other's buildings and leaving the book there because no one wants it.

String ‘em a long for a bit. Let them think they are stealing the mysterious artifact to
help keep it out of the hands of the evil cult and then, at their greatest moment of
triumph reveal that they have been working for the villain all along and the evil cult
that had plagued them were the protectors of the artifact and humanity’s last hope.
When the realization sets in for the players that their hubris and foolish dreams of
heroism doomed, when they truly know the folly of their action, then you can have
some shit awaken.

I mean, that is basically the plot of the Critical Role CoC one shot

I remember someone posted an idea once about trying to heist an Egyptian pyramid and it
was set during either the Napoleonic Era or during WW2. Either napoleon or Hitler
supposedly was experimenting with Egyptian curses (wish I remembered who, sorry) but
then things go lovecraftian. It was a really interesting premise, I'm not really doing it
justice.

Has there been any historical precedent of D&D 5e doing heists well? Locate Object + Dimension
Door sounds like it would break the vast majority of theft objectives. A lead-lined box would
prevent me from scrying the object, but I can scry to find the box itself.
lmk if the book suggests Fighters to take Stealth/Deception proficiency and that's all you need

Nooooooope.
Even Dragon Heist included no actual heists. Just "here's the place where they are. attack it to
get what you want."
If it had been even halfway competently written, we wouldn't have needed The Alexandrian
Remix.

Even if you're excited because it's an adventure anthology, let's look at the facts:
1 - OGL drama. We should really be boycotting WOTC, but if you insist on giving them money...
2 - The quality of their recent releases has been shoddy and poor. I mean look at Spelljammer. Do
you really want to spend money on that kind of quality?
3 - Yes, Saltmarsh and Yawning Portal are good. Keep in mind those are adventures from older
adventures, written by different writers and designed with a different philosophy. Golden Keys
will not be designed this way, they're written by modern WOTC (aka contractors) and will likely be
like pulling teeth to actually run them.

Right, but Radiant Citadel has been a blast to run and has required minimal adjustment to fit
into my world. The adventures, so far, flow easily and naturally.

Counterpoint to #3: Radiant Citadel and Candlekeep Mysteries were really enjoyable. CM had
a few misses, but overall I liked them.

I love how everyone points to Spelljammer as the objective example of terrible quality, and
meanwhile I think it's cool as heck and can't wait to start running it 😂

It's because Spelljammer is cool, but the 5e book is still shoddy work.

Sure. The point was that "greatest" is entirely subjective and no company can legitimately
claim it. And I figured since Paizo started out publishing adventures for WotC, Pathfinder
was the funniest.

Since they use “greatest” as in the most popular, they can legitimately claim that D&D is
the world’s greatest role playing game. And I honestly doubt that it would change.

Not a chance, WotC. Stop trying to steal back the SRDs licensed under OGL 1.0a. Relicense them
under a new OGL that is explicitly irrevocable. Then maybe I'll buy from you again. Until then, not
a cent. Not on books, not on DMs Guild, not on D&D Beyond, not on your movie.

Bold of you to post anything expressing excitement regarding a WotC product in this current
climate.
I mean, bold to post anything positive about WotC products on this sub in general, but
especially in the current climate.
3 Reply Share
I’ve never been a big fan of cancel culture. Or people bullying others just because they
have differing opinions. What I am currently seeing in this sub is alot of both combined
with ragemongering. I don’t mind pushing back once in a while. On a positive note, I pre-
ordered this book from my FLGS today! Want to make sure that they are not impacted by
this situation.
4 Reply Share
The leaks of the original draft of the proposed new OGL seemed to be Dick Dastardly
tier-greedy, but I won't sit here and pretend to understand what all the legalese meant,
because I'm not a lawyer and I don't trust the average redditor's interpretation of the
situation because i recognize they're as qualified to speculate as I am. The few lawyers
I've seen cover this on YouTube like LegalEagle (who admits this isn't really his area of
expertise) make it seem like the OG OGL was basically pinky promises and a spit-sealed
handshake that didn't actually do anything.
My biggest annoyances from the community here are the evangelicals from other
systems taking the opportunity to proselytize for their tabletop of choice on the DnD
subs, and the usual redditor habit of everyone suddenly becoming armchair lawyers
trying to weigh in on the matter with a very rudimentary understanding of the
situation, legally-speaking (i.e "in perpetuity" vs "irrevocable"). There's also been social-
media shit-stirrers taking advantage of the climate of ill-will to post wild claims that
totally came from my uncle Joe Coastwizard and are reliable so follow me for more true
and verifiable content, and this community just buys it at face value because "Wizards
Bad, upvotes to the left". And if you comment anything vaguely positive in the direction
of DnD, well, the hive-mind can't have that now, can they?
That being said, corporations are not your friend and you don't owe them a thing. If
people want to drop their support of WotC over this, that's a totally valid course of
action, and I won't hold that against them. If people want to keep buying DnD books, I
won't hold that against them either. The situation, as reddit understands it, is cynical
and shitty, but this isn't like a Nestlé or JKRowling-tier shitstorm where lives are being
actively harmed because Capitalism is doing what Capitalism does. I'm sure I'll get shit
for that because "something something boiling frogs, something something you're part
of the problem", but, eh. Whatever.
Side note: most FLGS I've visited will sell third-party content compatable with 5e if their
financial status is of concern to you. Best of both worlds, really.
3 Reply Share
100% agree. Not too too concerned about my stores financial status. They are the
“Worlds Largest Game Store”. If you want to see the coolest store ever do a google
image search for “Sentry Box Calgary”

A good heist is why I have Blades in the Dark. I don't need one where the player just casts
dimension door and gets through most of the obstacles.

I still wanna take a peek at the mess that Wizards releases for it out of morbid curiousity.
Strixhaven suggested martial players/fans to pick up the new feats for getting to join in on
the fun, what do we get this time?
2 Reply Share
The last thing I need right now is another adventure book, but I am more interested in this
theme than the last anthology they released. Seems like it'd be much easier to pick up and
drop in. Disappointed that it only goes up to 11.

Just didn't really fit in to my setting of choice, the Forgotten Realms. A bunch of nations
nobody has ever heard of but has been there all along... It also kind of redefines what
the ethereal plane is.

This is an easy thing to not purchase. It doesn't even include player options

Believe it or not, not every book needs to give wizards another subclass. Some books can
really just be about the adventures, like literally every other anthology has done. There are
valid reasons not to buy this product. I think this isn't one of them.
1 Reply Share
CamelopardalisRex +3 · 3 mo. ago
DM
I was unclear. What I meant was that one convincing reason many people buy books is for
player options. This doesn't have any, so that big reason to get a book doesn't exist. The
argument isn't without options a book is worthless, the argument is that options are the
reasons a lot, probably most, players buy books, and this doesn't have any, so most people
won't need them.

Is there something different in mine that's any different from the variant sailor jokes that's
been happening and still up over the past few weeks I've seen here? Not vague enough? I
edited it to be more so, but I was careful not to mention the term outright or suggest
where such a thing would happen. Not sure if there are other rules that would make
certain comments okay and not others but I'll try to be more careful in the future.

Unfortunately we can't allow any suggestions in regards to piracy, even if they are more
on the subtle side - which these sailor/pirate jokes are - as per our rules. Some of these
jokes, by themselves, made me laugh, but unfortunately I am bound by the rules just
like any other moderators. If you have issues with how we moderate, you can always

It has a cool enough cover that they probably could have sold me this a month ago on good will
alone but there’s absolutely no way I’ll pay for anything WotC publishes anytime soon, especially
an adventure book I’ll likely barely touch.
