1. OBJECTIVE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The objective of this assignment is to design a pipe network for a bottled food (jam/sauce/juice/ etc.)
manufacturing plant and thereby develop the skills required to evaluate the pipe network in the aspects
such as water requirement for the operation of the plant, water balance for the processes and selection
of appropriate pipes, valves, pumps, tanks through design calculations. Students are required to engage
in self-learning and use available resources to complete this assignment.

This assignment will consist of three sections: project proposal, final report, and presentation and viva.

2. MARKS ALLOCATION AND DEADLINES

This assignment carries 15% of the marks from the entire module. The breakdown of marks for the
different sections of the assignment is as follows.
Table 1. Breakdown of marks and deadlines

Mark Allocation
Section Deadlines
Out of Entire Module

Project proposal submission 26th of March 5%

Final report submission 12th week 5%

Group presentation and viva 13th and 14th week 5%

Total 15%

Adherence to the deadlines is strictly followed. Late submissions will be penalised as follows.
• A penalty of 5% of the allocated marks per day up to one week.
• Reports later than 1 week will not be accepted for evaluation.

3. TASK DETAILS
3.1. Project Proposal
The project proposal accounts for 5% of the module. It should cover the following points.
• A brief introduction about the products manufactured in the factory.
• Identify the processes involved and the type of equipment used for the selected factory from
literature and/or industrial practices.
• Identify a suitable production capacity based on the capacity of existing plants.
• Identify the processing units and develop a process flow diagram.
• Identify the water consumption for each unit according to the production capacity selected.
• Prepare the water balance for the entire plant including other facilities such as canteens,
toilets, etc.
• Develop a plant layout for water distribution.
Develop a sketch of a plant layout using the information gathered to visualize the process units
and equipment and the conditions of the required water. Especially the location of the
equipment/process units and the vertical heights/heads required must be indicated. You may
refer Coulson and Ricardson volume 6-chapter 14 section 14.4 for better understanding of the
factors to be considered when developing a plant layout.

Note: Given plant layout is only a possible combination of units. You must have your own
plant layout by selecting a suitable combination of units based on your production
process/es, production capacity as well as the material flow.
• Include intext citation of data obtained for calculations.
• If any assumptions are used, identify them appropriately with justification.
• Formatting for the proposal is given under section 4.
• The proposal must contain a maximum of 5 pages excluding the cover page, table of contents
and references.

3.2. Final report

The project proposal accounts for 5% of the module. It should cover the following points.
• A comprehensive report carrying all in-depth calculations related to the design and analysis
of the pipe network system for the food manufacturing plant proposed by you in the project
proposal.
• The pipe network design includes the selection of appropriate pumps, pipes, valves, storage
tanks and any other necessary components in the network.
• This is an open-ended assignment driven through self-learning. Therefore, the calculations
may include (but not limited to),
o Pump selection
o Pressure heads/losses
o Flowrates
o Tank and pipe dimensions
• A summary of important information from project proposal and the plant layout must be
included in the introduction section.
• Detailed pipeline diagrams drawn using a suitable software (Ex. AutoCAD, Solidworks)
should be attached along with calculations.
• Numbered appendices (attached after References) can be used to include additional
information.
• Include intext citation of data obtained for calculations.

3
CH 1044 | Pipe Network Design Guideline

• If any assumptions are used, identify them appropriately with justification.

• Formatting for the report is given under section 4.
• The final report must contain a maximum of 15 pages excluding the cover page, table of
contents, references, and appendices.
• Fill the Individual Contribution form uploaded to the Moodle and attach at the end of the
report.

3.3. Presentation and Viva

The presentation and viva account for 5% of the module.
• Group Presentation - 15 minutes
o 10-15 slides with only important information of the design
o Each member of the group should deliver a part of the presentation according to a
preferred order.
o Each presenter should introduce themselves with name and index number before their
part.
o Include diagrams wherever possible to summarize and explain the calculations/
results. Refrain from using lengthy paragraphs/calculation steps in the presentation.
o All the members must be available for presentation and the Q&A session.
• Individual viva - 10 minutes
o Questions will be asked regarding the assignment, mainly focusing on the areas each
student contributed. However, every student must be thorough with entire work.
o Theoretical (assignment related information) and practical questions (Ex. Meetings
held to discuss about the assignment, Information and workload sharing within group
members, Obstacles faced and how you overcame them) might be asked.
o Only the person whom the question is directed at is expected to answer the question.
The others will be given the opportunity to answer that question with the discretion of
the examiner.

CH 1044 | Pipe Network Design Guideline

4. FORMATTING OF REPORTS AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

• General formatting for the proposal and report.
o PDF submission with A4 Page Size with Moderate margins.
o Font: Times New Roman, Justified, 12 pt, 1.5 Line spacing.
o Topics and subtopics (up to two heading levels) must be numbered.
o Page numbers, table of contents, executive summary, appropriately captioned tables
and figures should be included.
o Use passive voice with proper technical writing.
• References
o Harvard format - In text citation is NECESSARY.
• Cover page as per Annex A
• One person from each group should submit the proposal and the report pdf, named as
“Group Number”.
Example G_1 (To the Moodle assignment “Pipe Network – Proposal)
G_1 (To the Moodle assignment “Pipe Network – Final Report)
• Upon submission of each report (proposal and final) individually submit the peer review
evaluation form given in Annex C.
• Plagiarism will be checked using Turnitin software, should be less than 15%.
• Not following the guidelines will lead to reduction of marks.
