FESTIVALS IN MARINDUQUE

-JANUARY-
Maalindog Tubaan Festival (January 17 Buenavista, Marinduque) – This festival is newly
organized (2019) festival of street dancing competition in line with its town fiesta, in
commemoration of the local coconut wine “tuba” industry and celebrating a legend of the beauty
of Mount Malindig volcano, the highest peak of the island province.
Ati-atihan Festival (3rd Sunday of January-Sta. Cruz, Marinduque) - A festival that started small
in some barangays near the Poblacion of Sta. Cruz around 1960’s, later developed into a much
bigger street dancing event and competitions in honor of the Sto. Nino, where participants paint
themselves of black soot and garbed with elaborate costumes resembling of the Ati tribe of Cebu.
-FEBUARY-
Gasang-gasang Festival (Easter Sunday-Gasan, Marinduque) - A joyous celebration faith and
thanksgiving for the “newly Risen Christ” featuring street dancing competitions between 21
barangays of the municipality held annually during Easter Sunday highlighted by a final
performance in front of thousand audiences for judging in one of the town’s open park.

-APRIL-
Moriones Festival (April 5 - 12, Boac, Marinduque) - During this Easter week, the streets are
filled with "Morions" or men and women dressed in Moriones costumes, complete with props of
masks and shields. Throughout the festival, the Morions not only parade their bizarre outfits and
eye-catching centurion masks, but they also engage with the crowd through a dance routine,
sword fights, and even pranks and surprises.

-MAY-
Kangga Festival (May 13, Mogpog, Marinduque) - Celebrated annually in honor of the town’s
patron St. Isidore de Labrador, patron of farmers where barrio folks converge at the town and
parade with its own “kangga” or wooden sled pulled by a carabao and bedeck with different
products from each locality. The celebration is capped by the contest of the most beautiful
“kangga”, on cooking of local delicacies and the unhusking of coconuts.

-JULY-
Araw ng Gasan-Kalesayahan (August 20- Gasan, Marinduque) - A big celebration of different
activities, programs, beauty contests, and highlighted by parade and competition of ornately
designed “kalesa”, materials made from local indigenous materials, recycled materials or
combination of both. Each of the municipalities’ districts or combination of two or three
barangays provides entries that mainly features the major local industry, or famous tourist
destination, each kalesa has their couple of beauty contests competitors on board during the
parade.

-DECEMBER-

BILA-BILA Festival (December 8- Boac, Marinduque) - A festival derived from the local term for
butterflies, this street dancing competition and parade is held annually during the town fiesta of
Boac on December 8th. From five districts of the municipality, everyone will compete for the
best choreography, most number of participants, and best dressed contingent.
