Previous Knowledge: Children can name three things that makes someone a good friend.

Learning Outcomes: HE 3.8 Describe and demonstrate how people at school can help each other
when they feel sad or lonely, or have problems.

Objectives: Through explanation and discussion, children will be able to:


• Define the term sad
• Identify situations that can make them feel sad
• List things that can be done to help cope with sadness

Concepts:
When children feel sad, lonely, or have other
problems, they can
a) talk with each other (friends)
b) share their feeling with their teacher
c) have a one-on-one session with the counselor
d) think about happy times and cheer up
Feeling lonely is a feeling of emptiness and by
yourself, but you want to be around people

Feeling sad is an emotional pain related to


disadvantage, loss, grief, helplessness,
disappointment, and sorrow. An individual
experiencing sadness may become quiet and
withdraw from others.

wil need to state one thing of how to become a good friend

Development:

Inquiry-Based Learning
Teacher will ask students:
How are you feeling today?
What kinds of things could make you feel sad?
When you feel sad, what do they do?
How do you act?
How can you tell if someone is unhappy?
What can you do to feel better when someone around you is unhappy?
Who can you talk to when you're feeling low?
Place the emoji that depicts sad on the board, children will brainstorm what type of emoji it is, children
should say sad. Ask students what is sad
Picture Discussion: Think-Pair-Share
Place students in groups of two
Provide pictures of people that are sad to each group
Let students discuss the images and brainstorm
Have students present to the class what is happening in the picture and how they can help the sad
person.
Role-Play: Stand Up- Stand Up- Pair Up
Allow students to dance around the classroom, find a partner, and discuss what makes them sad.
Let the pair join with another pair and discuss how to help someone sad.
Have students go back to their seats in groups of four and present to the class
Closure:
children will play the game of fishing pond
children will select a fish and will need to answer the scenario that is on the fish
children will share how they can help someone who is sad
Conclusion:
Coping with Sadness Role-play: Think-Pair-Share
Group students in pairs.
Let one student be
the sad person and the other student be the ones to comfort the unfortunate student who has a dead pet
Provide a picture of a deceased pet for each group
Let students discuss how they feel and how they would cope with the sadness.
What can be done to feel better?

Extended Activity:
Draw a picture of something that helped them feel better.
Let students present the picture to the class and explain the role-play
