WIRELESS
Have you ever been frustrated by a drop in cell phone signal as soon as you enter a building?
Have you tried to go online while at a sporting event only to watch your phone struggle
to find and maintain a viable signal? Where building structures, environmental conditions
or large numbers of users pose a challenge to cellular service or local wireless networks,
a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) can be deployed. A DAS is an onsite customizable
antenna system that enables the extension of a multitude of technologies, including 4G
LTE and emerging 5G high-speed data, to all the desired users. Stadiums, campuses,
large manufacturing facilities or high-rise buildings can benefit from a DAS. Such a system
allows the owner to meet user expectations by populating areas with sufficient antennas to
accommodate the number of anticipated users. And, DAS is just one of a growing list of
wireless applications.
To support this growth Hitachi Cable America (HCA) manufactures a wide selection of
cables that meet the demands of wireless technologies, such as DAS, Fiber to the Antenna
(FTTA), and Power Over Ethernet (PoE). HCA manufactures fiber optic cables, coaxial
cables, shielded and unshielded twisted pair cables, power and hybrid cables. HCA has
supplied ruggedized hybrid cables for some of the most demanding tall, vertical cell towers
in the Americas, as well as sophisticated smaller solutions for rail, aviation terminals,
stadiums and concert venues. HCA is well positioned to support your specific needs.
As the Internet of Things (IoT) evolves and more and more devices become wirelessly
networked, the demands on those wireless networks increase along with the dependence
on the cable infrastructure that supports those wireless signals. Infrastructure for wireless
technologies are currently experiencing exponential growth due to the dramatic increase
in the use of wireless devices. Additionally, many of the components of a wireless network
also derive their power from their low-voltage link to the network. As a result, PoE is
growing in step with the spread of wireless networks.

Cable Components and Solutions for Wireless
Y ou may ask yourself, “What does a Sushi Master have to do with cable?” The answer to that
question is simple. At Hitachi Cable America (HCA), we know cable like a Sushi master knows
his craft. It takes years of training and expertise to go from the wakiita position “near the cutting
board” to the itamae position “Master Chef in front of the board”. To make fine Sushi, one must
understand the ingredients, the subtle interactions between the ingredients and preparation,
WIRELESS
and, of course, the final arrangement to achieve a superb dish. To achieve greatness, only the
finest of components are selected. Not unlike cable, components and preparation are essential
to success. HCA carefully selects and manufactures the finest of core materials for each and
every product.
We offer components and cabling for a variety of wireless applications that satisfy even the
most sophisticated of supply chain needs.

Direct Current (DC) Power Components
With so many manufacturers of DC power wire, it is important to understand that not every DC power wire is the same. When it comes to cabling of
complex bundles, Hitachi Cable America (HCA) has identified many factors that affect the manufacturing quality and final performance of a hybrid bundle.
HCA has invested significantly in sophisticated equipment and technologies that have enabled us to provide not only quality components that go into
hybrid bundles, but also complex bundles necessary for cellular applications. Our clear understanding of the component manufacturing process and
the subtleties of incorporating those components into a hybrid cell bundle makes HCA not only an ideal choice as a cable partner but also as a discrete

Alarm Wire Components
Alarm wire used in cell tower cable is frequently Thermoplastic Flexible Fixture (TFFN) wire or Machine Tool Wire (MTW). TFFN is a universal
building wire most commonly used as “fixture” or “lighting” wire, while MTW is used for machine tools, appliances and control cabinets. MTW
wire offers a high strand count, yielding a more flexible option than TFFN. Both styles are rated to 600 volts.
These wires are available from 22 to 16 American Gauge Wire (AWG) discrete wires or twisted pairs for tower applications. The Nylon coating

• -40°F (-40°C) to 194°F (90°C) (dry/wet) temperature rating
• When used with fiber the temperature rating is based on that of the fiber which is rated to 176°F (80°C)
Power Jumpers
Power jumpers typically consist of 2 to 12 conductor DC wires with an optional ground wire (bare or insulated). Based on the design, we
can apply shielding, drain wire(s) and armoring as needed. Shielding is important in these cables because their location in the network
is different than the large hybrid trunks which typically are not shielded. Therefore, some cell providers prefer to keep the power cables
separate from the communications cable and power jumper designs serve those customers.

Power+ Composite Indoor / Outdoor Cable
™
WIRELESS
WIRELESS
Power+™ composite indoor / outdoor plenum cables are the solution for applications where remote power and network
connectivity are required and distance may be a factor. Power+™ composite cables utilize fiber optic strands to provide
the link to the network and a pair of stranded copper conductors to deliver power. The different constructions of Power+™
composite cables address the variety of applications on the market. Power+™ composite cables are ideal for long
distance PTZ camera installations, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), and Passive Optical Networks (PON). Power+™
composite cables are available with a plenum rating (CMP-OF), (CL3P-OF) or (CL2P-OF) which makes them suitable for
a wide variety of environments.
For all wireless applications, power to and signal from the antenna are necessary. This results in a need for copper
cables for power, and with growing frequency, fiber optic cables for signal. Composite cables, cables that contain
both copper and fiber optic components, are the ideal solution. Composite cables simplify installation by combining
both media inside one jacket. Additionally, the use of fiber optic strands allows greater bandwidth between the
antenna and the associated electronics. This is imperative for 5G applications. Hitachi Cable America (HCA) Power+™
composite cable solution offers a variety of composite cable constructions that can be used for cellular, wireless and
other applications where remote power and network connectivity are required. Power+™ cables, though designed for
outdoor use, also carry a plenum rating allowing them to be installed in a wide range of environments.

Flat Flexible Cable (FFC) For Automotive
O ur wiring devices enable highly dense packaging and space-saving electrical transmission,
making it possible to produce smaller electronic devices and automotive components with
better performance.
We offer:
• Flexible flat cable (FFC)
TRANSPORTATION
• Shielded flexible flat cable (FFC)
FFCs are flat flexible ribbon-shaped cables with multiple metallic conductors sandwiched
between two insulating tapes. They are used extensively in consumer electronic products
such as digital cameras, audio equipment, flat-screen televisions and office equipment.
Shielded flexible flat cable (FFC) for automotive application use include high density mounting
and fine lead pitch, improved flexibility and handing ability, high heat resistance PVC (105°C /
221°F) and low connection resistance.
Tin / lead alloy solder was formerly used on FFC conductors, but ongoing Restriction
of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic
equipment requirements have led to lead-free FFCs. The drawback of applying lead-free
electroplated tin to FFC conductors is that tin whiskers form in the area between the
FFC and the connector. This can cause short circuits and arcing in electrical equipment. To
address this, HCA has developed a tin-plated conductor with reduced tin whiskering based
on applying a very thin “nano” coating of zinc on the electroplated tin.
Benefits of FFCs:
• Reduced mounting costs. Since both ends of the terminals are machined,
terminal machining preprocessing can be eliminated.
• Excellent flexibility. The flat copper conductor encourages the CU-JoinerTM
flexibility.
• Custom designs are available to match the mounting method, the type and
number of wires, pitch between wires, terminal length and insulation length.
• Thirteen UL approved types available.

CAN Bus Industrial Cable Applications
C ontroller Area Network bus style designs, or CAN bus for short, is a bus style data communications standard used heavily in automotive
applications for microcontrollers and other devices to communicate together without the need for a host computer. First developed in 1983 and
launched into production in 1991, CAN bus has grown in popularity thanks in part for its ability to reduce copper wiring cost while reducing the

Since its inception CAN bus has become one of five protocols used in the on-board diagnostics (OBD)-II vehicle diagnostics standard, making
it a mandatory part for all cars and light trucks sold in the United States after 1996. Several designs, currently are available. CAN bus has
expanded beyond the automotive market and has moved into other transportation applications such as locomotive.
Hitachi Cable America (HCA) specializes in highly unique industrial applications for CAN bus cables. One example is a high temperature CAN
bus sensor cable for engines and locomotive drive systems for NOx reduction.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) Cable
INDUSTRIAL
Hitachi was one of the original founders of the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) technology.
The proprietary HDMI standard developed was specifically for transmitting uncompressed and
compressed video and digital audio data from an HDMI-compliant end device, to video monitors or
a projector. The system requires highly engineered cables to support the application. Our cables are
known for their exceptional quality and performance.
Several versions of the HDMI standard have been developed since the inception. The most current
standard is HDMI 2.1 which was released in 2017. Moving large amounts of data quickly and with
high fidelity was paramount to the HDMI success. The initial standard allowed for 3.96 Gbit/s data
rate while the latest standard has skyrocketed to 42.6 Gbit/s.
Thanks in part to Hitachi’s unique construction materials our HDMI cables are well suited to
withstand even the most stringent of installation and usage requirements, while providing customers
with outstanding performance and cables that last.
PHYSICAL CONSTRUCTION DESCRIPTION Each precision HDMI Cable is extruded using Hitachi Cable America’s unique Flometrics Liquid Film ™ extrusion process. After extrusion, each conductor
is braided with balanced, tensioned controlled braiders. Each component is then extruded with a PVC jacket. Multi-coax bundles are cabled together then extruded with an overall PVC jacket. Non jacketed,
bundled cables are also available. Please contact the factory.

Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cable
Universal Serial Bus (USB) was developed to simplify and improve the interface between personal computers
and associated peripheral devices as well as the user. Such peripheral devices include keyboards, pointing
devices, printers, disk drives, network adapters and portable consumer electronics like video cameras and
music players. USB cables were designed to be “hot pluggable” and self-configuring once connected. This
greatly alleviated the need for operator device inputs, system configuration and rebooting. The cables were also
INDUSTRIAL
designed to transmit both signal and power making them highly versatile. In fact, USB cables have become
frequently used to power smaller portable devices. The USB standard is unique in that it can takes advantage
of peripheral device processing power, enabling the devices to self-manage and speed up operations. However,
USB cables are limited in length, generally short runs from a host to a peripheral device.
USB 2.0 transmits data at a maximum speed of 480 Mbps. It was released in April of 2000 and is still widely
in use today. It has since been superseded by USB 3.0 Superspeed which offers further improvements in
performance, i.e. 5.0 Gbit/s, SuperSpeed 3.1 at 10 Gbit/s and SuperSpeed 3.2 at 20 Gbit/s. The USB
4.0 specification released in 2019 is based on the Thunderbolt 3 specification, which supports 40 Gbit/s
and is backwards compatible with USB 3.2 and USB 2.0. The new USB-C Standard is just emerging in
the market. Please consult your HCA representative to discuss our current USB solutions to fulfill your
specification requirements.

Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) Shielded Cable
Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) is a standard legacy system used around the world for fast
and effective connection and data transfer between computers and the devices connected to or within
them. SCSI is bus technology designed to connect devices to a computer, where all devices connect to
a central bus and are “daisy-chained” together. SCSI uses three different signaling types, Single-Ended
(SE) Differential, HVD (or high-volt-age differential), and LVD (or low-voltage differential). SCSI is available
INDUSTRIAL
SCSI cables available from Hitachi Cable America (HCA) are available in numerous constructions and
configurations to best suit the wide variety of applications they are used for. SCSI cables are primarily
available as bulk SCSI electronic cable and SCSI ribbon cables.
SCSI electronic cable is manufactured by HCA to meet the most rigorous specifications for computers,
PC components, and other electronics. They are also designed and manufactured to satisfy the strict
OEM tolerances required by various industries and applications. SCSI cables are available in 28 AWG
and 30 AWG SCSI Non Shielded, 30 AWG SCSI Shielded, and SCSI Lite HDI configurations for
applications that call for particular size advantages over standard RS-232 cables.
Note: Cable assembly shown for reference only. HCA does not manufacture these cable assemblies.

VGA & SVGA Cable
V ideo Graphics Array (VGA) and Super Video Graphics Array (SVGA) also known as enhanced or ultra
VGA cables have been around for a very long time. Many computers, monitors and even televisions still
support these connections despite the advancement of other video standards such as DVI and HDMI. VGA
cables support 640 x 480 resolutions, while SVGA support up to 800 x 600 resolution. Both standards are
INDUSTRIAL
being used for existing legacy equipment and new installation conversion cabling.
Hitachi Cable America (HCA) provides cables that are well suited for carrying high-resolution signals over
long distances of several meters in length. Without a high-quality cable image quality can suffer, such
as double images, smeared images and, possibly, no image at all. When transmitting high-resolution
images over distances shorter than 5 feet, lower cost, less sophisticated cables are likely to be adequate.
The standard construction uses 28 and/or 26 AWG stranded tinned copper conductors with cellular
insulation. Twisted pair (or discrete wires) are cabled with coaxes and shielded. Both non-plenum and
plenum rated constructions available.
Note: Cable assembly shown for reference only. HCA does not manufacture these cable assemblies.

ChannelFLEX Flat Cable
®
ChannelFLEX® is a unique cabling solution that permits the owner to safely run cables
and/or hoses in flat pods, from Point A to Point B, without concerns of binding or kinking.
ChannelFLEX® utilizes an internal structure that supports the entire construction and
eliminates the need for C-track in assembled form. ChannelFLEX® reduces installation time,
minimizes cable related downtime, and ensures maximum performance.
INDUSTRIAL
C-track material, when flexed, generates particulates. ChannelFLEX® utilizes enclosed
pods made from ultra-low friction material that encapsulate and trap unwanted particulate.
ChannelFLEX® pods are designed to accommodate a number of cables and/or tubes
carrying gases or liquids.
ChannelFLEX® is designed for long and predictable flex life applications (up to 30,000,000
cycles or more for some cables). The quantity of pods in the ChannelFLEX® link can
be customized. You can have individual or multiple cables per pod. If desired, a self-
supporting non-metallic chain can be inserted into a pod to allow the link to maintain a
minimum bend radius. This feature ensures cable and tube bend radius minimums are not
exceeded.
The ChannelFLEX® link is IPA Class 1 rated for particulate emissions, it can be used in
cleanroom environments, such as those in medical or semiconductor manufacturing.
Features:
• Longer flex life
• Improved flexibility
• EMI/RFI shielding performance approaching a braid shield and

Other Industrial Standards
S ometimes people use the term ‘legacy cabling’ to describe an old technical standard.
However, some technology is designed to operate with a 5 year life cycle while others
operate with a 25 or 35 year life cycle or longer. Legacy cabling is more appropriately
deemed existing infrastructure cabling that has varying life cycles in different industries. While
INDUSTRIAL
other cable companies prematurely drop production of older technologies, Hitachi Cable
America understands that many of these standards are so well established that to change the
infrastructure is often costly and not always possible. As the old adage goes, “If ain’t broke,
then don’t fix it”, all too often applies. Hitachi makes an extra effort to provide support for
the most popular application cable styles such as:
IEEE 1284: The IEEE 1284 standard released in 1994, was designed primarily around printer
throughput. It allowed for faster transfer data than previous SCSI interfaces and it could
be produced at a much lower cost. This benefited many aspects of the computer network
(scanners, tape drives, hard disks, network adapters and other devices). Expensive SCSI
cards were no longer necessary, the built-in parallel interface was sufficient.
UL2464 styles that historically supported RS232 devices: The Underwriters Laboratories
(UL) AWM (appliance wiring material) 2464 cable usually has a general purpose PVC jacket
and is available from 2 to 10 conductors or more in a wide range of gauges (16 AWG to 28
AWG) resulting in outer diameters from 3.8 mm to 6.5 mm.

BUILDING
INFRASTRUCTURE
I n virtually all cable based communication links, it is the cable that determines the ultimate
performance of that link. It is primarily the cable, not the connectors, that establishes how well the
applications will be supported. This is the reason why many cable manufacturers make different
performance levels of Category 6 and 6A cable while jack and plug manufacturers produce only
one jack or plug to mate to them. The desirable headroom that results from the link is provided
by the cable. With a growing list of applications for Category cable critical to a facility’s operation,
selecting a quality cable from an established manufacturer is key. Hitachi Cable America has a
strong reputation as a leader in high performance specialty wire and cable. So, protect your
investment by selecting Hitachi.
Whether you are installing the highest-performing copper or fiber optic cabling infrastructure,
there are a number of well-known brands available to choose from. What makes one brand
a wiser choice than another? Which one offers maximum performance, while also providing
the best value? Open System Architecture (OSA) from Hitachi Cable America (HCA) provides
world class performance using virtually any combination of HCA cables with verified connective
hardware in the network. The ANSI/TIA-568 standard specifies the performance requirements of
all network components and defines interoperability base-line limits to ensure that combinations
of cable with connectivity will meet or exceed the system’s intended application. By employing
a HCA OSA solution, end users have the freedom to choose from a wide range of approved
quality connectivity products that best meet their specific needs and be confident that the chosen
solution will support all applications designed to operate over that solution.

DATA CENTER
Data centers are centralized locations where the computing and networking equipment
are concentrated for the purpose of collecting, storing, processing, distributing data. Hitachi
Cable America (HCA) has a long history of manufacturing and supplying high performance
copper cables and fiber optic cables for building infrastructure and data center application
Copper and fiber optic cables are available in Plenum, Riser and Low Smoke Halogen Free/
Riser constructions. Certain fiber optic cables also have a CPR listing. Both copper cable
and fiber optic cable are our specialties.
To improve the data center deployment, most organizations use a mixture of copper cable
and fiber optics in their network infrastructure, since copper, like fiber, has its own advantages,
making it both necessary and complimentary to an installation. Copper can also transfer high
bandwidth data (in excess of 100 Gbps for a distance of 8 meters) between servers and
between clustered switches. Copper cables are very reliable and can be quite cost effective,
as compared to that of a fiber optic installation. Savings pre and post installation can be
significant. Copper cables also offer lower latency, use much less power and the subsequent
cooling requirements are reduced, which lowers the overall facilities power consumption
and operational expenditures over the life of the datacenter. In recent years, the ability to
deliver direct current power on Ethernet copper cables while delivering high speed data has
HITACHI CABLE AMERICA INC.
Fiber is ideal for transporting vast amounts of data quickly and efficiently over long distances
GE while being immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference
(RFI). Because of this, fiber is central to most datacenters, whether they are local, wide area
or metropolitan. Beyond the data center, fiber is used to link networks together between

buildings, be they commercial or residential, and within building infrastructures when distance
and interference is a concern for copper applications.
HCA’s Nanocore® loose tube cables are optimized for datacenter applications. These indoor,
tight fiber count cables have reduced diameters and allow for higher density fiber counts seen

APPENDIX CONDUCTOR DESIGN: PLATING
Technical Information
Conductor Plating
Types and Methods
CONDUCTOR
Bare copper alloy conductors will oxidize due to air exposure, heat, moisture and foreign chemical presence. This oxide, once present on
APPENDIX
the conductor surface, will prevent good, reliable connections. To prevent oxidation, a conductor can be coated with a material that will not
oxidize easily.
Coating Materials
• Tin—The most commonly used due to processing ease and relatively low cost (up to 150°C).
• Silver—Commonly used in conjunction with insulations made with high temperature fluoropolymers, such as TFE, silver can meet high
temperature requirements typically up to 200°C.
• Nickel—Used when service temperature exceeds 200°C—mainly aerospace and select military applications.
• Gold—Rarely used due to expense, gold has been applied when a flexible high conductivity coating was needed for aerospace control cable.
Coating Methods
• Hot Dip—A method where the strand or strand(s) are passed through a molten bath of coating material.
• Electroplating—Using the electrolysis method of bonding the coating metal to the base conductor.
• Cladding—Welding under heat and pressure two or more dissimilar metals.
Coating Types
• Tinned or Heavy Tinned—This is the simple application of a coating material by the dip or electroplating methods. Typically 40 micro inches
of tin remains on each strand and for heavy tin, 100 micro inches.
• Prefused—Sometimes called “Pre-bonded”, this method takes heavy tinned strands and fuses them with heat when they are in a stranded
conductor form to create a bonded conductor.
• Topcoated—After bare copper strands are cabled together, a layer of coating material, typically tin, is applied over the entire conductor,
creating a bonded conductor.
• Overcoated—After coated copper strands are cabled together, a layer of additional coating material, typically tin, is applied over.

APPENDIX CONDUCTOR DESIGN
Current Carrying Capacity of Copper Conductors
Current carrying capacity is defined as the amperage a conductor can safely carry before melting occurs in the conductor and/or the insulation. There
are many factors that will limit the amount of current that can be passed through a wire. Determining factors include:
• Conductor Size—The larger the circular mil area, the greater the current capacity.
CONDUCTOR
APPENDIX
• Insulation—The amount of heat generated should never exceed the maximum temperature rating of the insulation material.
• Ambient (surrounding) temperature—The higher the ambient temperature, the less heat required to reach the maximum temperature rating
of the insulation.
• Conductor Number—Heat dissipation is lessened as the number of individually insulated conductors, bundled together, is increased.
• Installation Conditions—Restricting the heat dissipation by installing the conductor in conduit, duct, trays or raceways lessens the current
carrying capacity. This restriction can be alleviated somewhat by using proper ventilation methods, forced air cooling, etc.
Taking into account all the variables involved, no simple chart of current ratings can be developed. The chart below should be used ONLY as an
estimations guide.

APPENDIX INSULATION DESIGN: Materials
Insulations
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) (thermoplastic)
• PVC formulations vary widely depending on the desired properties. Because it is relatively inexpensive, easy to extrude and exhibits many
excellent mechanical and electrical properties, PVC has been used for many applications.
APPENDIX
PLASTIC
• The maximum temperature range for the best PVC formulations is -55°C to 105°C with general purpose vinyls ranging -20°C to 80°C. PVC can
have excellent flame, moisture and abrasion resistance, as well as superb gasoline, alcohol, ozone, acids and solvent resistance.
• PVC can be formulated with non-migrating plasticizers for special electrical or termination applications. It can be modified for medical and food
preparation applications because PVC in general is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. PVC compounds exhibit high capacitance and attenuation
loss due to their relatively high dielectric constant when used in wire and cable. In retractile cord applications, PVC has below average to average
elastomeric properties. Additionally, at low temperatures, PVC should not be used when flexibility and flex life are required.
• PVC can be used in thin and heavy wall applications as a primary wire insulation as well as a cable jacket insulation.
Polyethylene (thermoplastic)
• Polyethylene is the compound most widely used in coaxial and low capacitance cables due to its fine electrical properties. Although polyethylene
is flammable, additives can be used to make the polyethylene flame retardant at the expense of the dielectric constant and power loss characteristics.
• Usable temperature ranges from a low of -65°C to as high as 80°C. Polyethylene (in high, medium and low densities) is generally very hard and
stiff, and these properties typically do not change over the usable temperature range. Polyethylene can be foamed to reduce the dielectric
constant to 1.50, creating an economically attractive insulation for use in special application coaxials and ultra low capacitance transmission cable.
Polyethylene can be used by for primary insulation as will as a cable jacketing compound.
Polyethylene—Based Variations
• Foamed or Cellular Polyethylene—Foaming polyethylene reduces the dielectric constant to approximately 1.5, which makes this a very attractive
insulation compound for cables requiring a high-speed transmission rate. Once foamed, the compound loses some of its tensile strength, elon-
gation, and dielectric strength properties, although they are still acceptable for use in many applications.
• Cross-linked Polyethylene—Rated at 150°C. Cross-linking changes polyethylene from a thermoplastic to a thermoset material, which creates a
high resistance to stress cracking, cut-through, soldering, and many solvents.
• Flame-retardant Polyethylene—Polyethylene is a very flammable material that can be controlled by the use of special flame-retardant additives.
These additives, however adversely affect many of polyethylene’s fine electrical properties, such as the dielectric constant, power factor, and
dielectric strength.
Polypropylene (thermoplastic)
• Polypropylene has properties almost identical to that of polyethylene and is used almost exclusively for thin wall primary insulations.
Polypropylene can be rated for -30°C to 80°C. Polypropylene can be foamed for improved electrical properties.
Polyurethane
• Polyurethane in general has excellent low-temp flexibility, high tensile strength, and long flex-life. It exhibits excellent chemical, water, and
abrasion resistance, as well as being extremely tough and cut-through resistant.
Plasticizers, which can migrate out to contaminate other compounds or cause embrittlement with aging, are not present in polyurethane.
Polyurethane is extremely flammable but can be offered in a flame-retardant version at the expense of tensile strength and surface finish.
One major disadvantage of polyurethane is its poor electrical qualities, which restrict its use to jackets. It does have excellent retractile cord
characteristics, and is a good candidate for use in salt-spray and low-temperature military applications.
Hytrel®
• Hytrel® was developed by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company to be used for thin-wall applications. Hytrel® is similar to Nylon in its
toughness, chemical resistance, flexibility, and resilience.
• Some applications include primary insulation for retractile and telephone line cords, high flex-life cables, and cables requiring a tight bend radius.
Nylon
• Nylon exhibits excellent jacket toughness, especially in thin-wall applications, and has excellent abrasion, cut-through, and chemical resistance.
Its main application is to provide these qualities when extruded over softer insulation compounds. Nylon has a very low coefficient of friction,
making it a good choice for use in high flex applications.
• Nylon does absorb moisture, which somewhat degrades its electrical properties from their original state.

APPENDIX INSULATION DESIGN: Materials
Insulations (Cont.)
Surlyn
• Surlyn™, an electrical grade ionomer from from E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, has been used for application requiring excellent
mechanical properties. Combining superb cut through and stress cracking resistance with ultra low temperature flexibility and a brittleness
temperature under -100°C, Surlyn™ can be used to meet many of the stringent military requirements.
APPENDIX
PLASTIC
TPR
• Thermoplastic Rubber was developed to act as a substitute in many applications for true thermoset rubber. Some advantages over thermoset
material are: Colorability, higher processing speeds, and wide service temperature range. TPR has excellent heat, weathering, and aging
resistance, and no curing is necessary.
• Most commonly used in applications where cut-through resistance is not required, but other properties of rubber are still necessary.
KYNAR®
• KYNAR’s advantages include: Exceptional chemical resistance, high tensile strength, abrasion resistance, cut through and UV resistance.
Additionally, it is highly flame resistant and produces very little smoke in the presence of flame. For applications requiring increased flexibility and
stress crack resistance, KYNAR FLEX® copolymers are recommended.
SOLEF®
• SOLEF® is a registered trademark of Solvay Specialty Polymers, LLC., a manufacturer of Vinylidene Fluoride-based resins. Solef has a number of
grades which are widely being used in fiber and overall jacketing applications. It’s properties are very similar to KYNAR’s.
PFA
• PFA possesses some of fluorocarbon’s best properties. Its high temperature rating of 250°C, low temperature of -65°C and dissipation factor of
0.0002 equal or better most of the other fluorocarbons’ properties. However, it does not possess the thermoset properties of TFE which limits it to a
select group of applications. Although it can be processed in long lengths, PFA’s high material cost has prevented it from gaining widespread use.
FEP
• FEP is the most commonly used fluoropolymer currently because of its excellent processing characteristics and wide applications range.
Although it is not a thermoset, this material does have high flame resistance. Hence, its usage in plenum cable and military applications has been
steadily increased as pricing and processing improve. FEP can also be “foamed” for improved data transmission characteristics.
