Twelve questions to answer after reading a journal article describing experimental studies

1. What report is this? (Use full reference citation, Vancouver, APA format, Journal of
Neuroscience)?!
2. Was is the “big question” of the study? What were the specific research questions in this
study?!
3. What was previously known about this question? How does answering the research
question(s) add something new to what is already known?!
4. Who or what was studied? (Cite number and key characteristics.) What was the
experimental design?!
a. Descriptive study!
b. Case study, multiple case study, case control design!
c. Correlational design!
d. Experiment, two-group experiment; multiple-group experiment; pre-test, post test;
quasi experiment.!
e. Factorial design, more than one independent variable on a dependent variable!
f. Factorial design with within-subjects measures.!
g. Time-series design: measures the dependent variable over time, with the level of the
independent variable changed in a sequential manner.!
5. In sequential order, what were the major steps in performing the study? (Record this in a
flowchart.) Do not just repeat details from Items 1-3 and 6-9. Create an explanatory
sketch that a year from now would help you recall how the study was done.!
6. What data were recorded and used for analysis? What scale of measurement was
used?!
7. What kinds of data analysis were used?!
8. If you have results: What were the results? (Refer to figures.) After analysis, what do the
data from collected say about the specific questions of the study? If you do not have
results What results do you expect to have? How would they answer the questions of
the study?!
9. What is your conclusion based on the initial question, the design of the study, and its
results? If you do not have results: What would you conclude based on your expected
results?!
10. What cautions do you have about interpreting the study?!
11. Are there any flaws in your study? How could the experimental design be improved?!
12. What particularly interesting or valuable things did you learn from reading the report?
(Consider results, method, discussion, references, and so on.)!
