Skills: listen attentively, think before speaking, speak audibly, ask and answer questions,
segment phonemes, blend phonemes

Content: Every letter makes a sound. Phonemic awareness is the ability to manipulate the
sounds in words.
The word ‘is’, is used when we are talking about one thing or person.

Day 1 (27 – 9 19)


Specific Objectives: Pupils will be able to:
1. Segment and discriminate letter sound.

2. Answer questions based on information about pictures with letter ‘Ss’

2. Listen to classmates, gives the sounds of ‘Ss’ words in context.

3 Use words with ‘Ss’ sound from Jingle to make sentences.

4. Separate/segment individual phonemes in given words

5. Tell the location of letter Ss in words. (The beginning, middle, or end)

6. Draw objects representing letter Ss words


Activities:
Whole Class (10 minutes)

Students will say the letters of the alphabet. They will be asked to recognize the letter Ss.
Thereafter participate by listening to a story from Jolly Phonics Text on “letter Ss” then joining
with teacher for a discussion. Students will weave their arm like a snake while making a
continuous ssssss sound. . From the story students will say the Ss words they hear. These will be
written for segmenting and blending phonemes.

Small Group (15 minutes)


Teacher says sat. She then segments the word orally by saying s/a/t
Students do the same in their different groups with words given to them orally such as sing, son,
sun, sand, six, saw.

Whole Group (15 minutes)


Students will use words with ‘Ss’ sound from Jingle to make sentences orally. This is to cement
the sound of letter Ss. They will also tell where the letter Ss is in the word. (The beginning,
middle or ending)

Evaluation 1: Draw objects representing letter Ss words.

Day 2 (24 – 9 -19)

Specific Objectives: Pupils will be able to:

1. Blend phonemes to form words.

2. Separate/segment individual phonemes in given words

3. Answer questions based on information about pictures with letter ‘Ss’

4. Listen to classmates use the word is in a sentence.

5. Tell the location of letter Ss in words. (The beginning, middle, or end)

6. Use the word ‘is’ in sentences.


Activities:
Whole Group (15 minutes)
Students will revisit the Ss letter jingle. They will clap for the number of phonemes they hear in
the selected Ss words given.

Small Groups (10 minutes)


Students will be placed in five small groups to observe how phonemes are segmented, then
blended together to produce a word. Example: Teacher says the word s/u/n slowly; then sounds
it quickly and seamlessly to produce the word sun.

Whole Group (10 minutes )


Students will then stand and be given segmented Ss words to blend them together and produce
the word as a whole. The first student in each case who is able to produce the intended word will
be allowed to sit. The activity continues until most or all students are sitting.

Whole Group (5 minutes)


Using the word ‘is’, students will select a Ss word and make a sentence. As many students as
possible will be allowed to try.
