1.0 – Introduction
The following information must be included in this section
A map representing Ethiopia and a brief discussion of its location and climate (50 words)
A description of the geographic processes (related to the water cycle and/or the rain shadow effect)
that have led to a water scarcity problem in Ethiopia (100 words)
Sources from Qlearn that help describe these geographic processes (students analysed these
sources in Week 4)
in Ethiopia, the climate varies mostly with altitude, and it goes from the hot and arid
climate of the lowlands to the cool climate of the plateau. Lying just north of the
Equator, the country experiences little variation in temperature throughout the year.
The hot arid temperature mixed in with the high mountains sucks out all the water from the environment
leaving most of Ethiopia arid. The direction of wind comes from the north-western side of the country
pushing all rain clouds into the mountains which sucks all of the water out of the cloud leaving the south
east of the country arid.

2.1 – Inquiry questions
Key Inquiry Question
How can we solve the water scarcity problem in Ethiopia?
How do natural processes affect water availability in Ethiopia? (This sub-question is
answered in Section 1.0 Introduction)
Sub-questions (These
help answer the Key
Inquiry Question)
What are the social, economic and environmental advantages and disadvantages of the
strategies to solve water scarcity in Ethiopia? (This sub-question is answered in Section 3.0
Body)
What is the best strategy to solve water scarcity in Ethiopia and what are the expected
effects of this strategy? (This sub-question is answered in Section 4.0 Conclusion)
3.0 – Body
3.1 – Analysis of Strategies
Two strategies to solve the problem of water scarcity in Ethiopia have been suggested. These are:
i. Construction of a greater number of wells in each community to access water from aquifers
(artesian bore water)
ii. Construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)
Follow the examples below and instructions in the table to complete the table on the next page. Each of
the 6 sections in the table should be about 50 – 90 words. We did a similar activity when examining the
advantages and disadvantages of the Ord River scheme.

4.0 – Conclusion
4.1 – Proposed action
In this section you will be recommending one of the two strategies you examined in the table in
section 3.0 (wells or GERD) to answer the sub question “What is the best strategy to solve water
scarcity in Ethiopia and what are the expected effects of this strategy?”
The most effective proposal for Ethiopia to manage water scarcity is…[Use an extended RACE paragraph
structure here, similar to what we did when we made a recommendation as to whether the Ord River
scheme was a positive or negative way of dealing with water scarcity]
