A product Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is a method used to measure the full environmental
impact of a product, from “cradle to grave.” Data is gathered from all areas of a product’s life,
from the manufacture of raw materials and their transportation to Formica sites, product
fabrication , further transportation to points of distribution and disposal at the end of life.
These complex sets of data are analyzed and applied in accordance with ISO 14040 Series
and the final LCA is then third-party certified against ISO14040.

1. The chart above illustrates how HPL and finished laminate worktop products assessed through the full
supply chain from material extraction to manufacturing and disposal.
2. The assessment was conducted by an independent, third party carbon and sustainability consultant
based in London, in accordance with the international standard ISO 14040 series
3. The specific impact criteria detailed in the LCA was based around:
– Energy Use
– Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG)
– Effect on Environmental Building Assessment Programs (LEED, BREAM)
– Water
5. All 10 manufacturing sites of Formica were represented throughout the LCA
6. Data was based on 2008 data supplied by each plant

Upon the completion of LCA in 2010, Formica Group has set goals to reduce emissions
from all operations, vehicles and facilities that may contribute to the formation of green
house gases. Formica Group aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 5% by the end of 2012.
The Formica Group is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to reducing its global
environmental impact by undergoing carbon footprint assessment and labelling products
with the Carbon Reduction Label. Formica is the first laminate manufacturer to be
certified with Carbon Trust’s Carbon Reduction Label.
Qualified to carry the Carbon Trust’s Carbon Reduction Label, Formica has
measured the carbon footprint for its flagship products :
1. High Pressure Laminates (HPL)
2. Continuous Process Laminate (CPL) – not offered in Asia
3. Compact Laminates
4. Countertops – only those available in Europe
Note: The Carbon Trust is a not-for-profit company with the mission to accelerate the move to a low carbon
economy, providing specialist support to businesses and the public sector to help cut carbon emissions, save energy
and commercialize low carbon technologies. By stimulating low carbon action we contribute to key UK goals of lower
carbon emissions, the development of low carbon businesses, increased energy security and associated jobs.

GREENGUARD
The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute was founded in 2001 with the mission of protecting
human health and quality of life by improving indoor air quality and reducing chemical
exposure.
The use of GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified® or GREENGUARD Children & Schools
Certified products contribute to the achievement of points in established green building rating
programs, such as LEED®.
Formica® Laminates, Compact® and DecoMetal® are certified in Asia for the GREENGUARD
Indoor Air Quality Certification and GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification
Therefore implementing pollutant source control strategies, such as selecting low volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) emitting products, is the best way to improve indoor air quality and
to prevent potential risk of cancer and other diseases.
