problems they face when taking online classes, some of which include: their lack
of motivation and understanding of the material, the decrease in communication
levels between the students and their instructors, and their increased feeling of

The Impact of the Pandemic on Students’ Academic Performance

The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically altered the world. It had a significant
impact on the educational system, particularly on students.

According to Ningsih and Sari (2022), flexibility is the fundamental benefit of

online learning. With this, students can access online classes at any time and location
to learn and complete tasks, making teaching and learning techniques can be more
effective and useful. But due to materials being able to be accessed any time and
anywhere, students with low self-discipline will procrastinate and take longer to submit
their work.

In terms of having unequal access to online education and hands-on,

collaborative learning, students were cut off from their teachers. There were few
chances to hang out with friends or participate in extracurricular activities. (Hamilton &
Gross, 2021). According to Fruehwirth et. al (2021), this caused an increase in both
depression and anxiety symptoms, which were attributed to general challenges brought
on by distance learning and social isolation.

Considering that digital access is also a requirement for interacting and gaining
help from teaching assistants and professors in remote learning, under-connected
students may be even more vulnerable in remote learning situations than in face-to-face
learning ones. (Katz et al., 2021). As stated by Alawamleh et. al (2020), because of the
decline in communication between the students and their instructors, the majority of
students and teachers still prefer classroom classes over online classes.

. In conclusion, not all students and teachers benefit from distance education.
Issues caused by the disease are unavoidable, especially for those who are
under-privileged.
