SECTION 2: OPERATION
A. PREOPERATIONAL CHECKS
s
TRACTOR’S CONTROLS, INDICATORS, AND EQUIPMENT AS
DESCRIBED IN TABLES 2-1 thru 2-7 OF THIS SECTION.
ne
CAUTION: NEVER RUN THE ENGINE WITH RECEPTACLE
rli
CONNECTED TO THE OPTIONAL ENGINE COOLANT HEATER. A
FLOW CHECK VALVE STOPS COOLANT FLOW THROUGH THE
Ai
HEATER WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. THE HEATER WILL BE
DAMAGED IF CONNECTED TO THE HEATER RECEPTACLE WHILE

NOTE: In temperatures below 40 °F (4.4 °C), ensure that in units with an
Note engine fuel heater option, heaters are operating 10 minutes prior to engine
er
starting and turned off before ENGINE STOP/RUN switch is placed in the
RUN position.
Am
In order to ensure safe, reliable operation, perform the following checks prior to operating the tractor:
ty
2. Walk around the tractor and inspect it for damage or missing equipment.
op
3. Check for damaged or under-inflated tires. Check that cold tire pressure is 130 psi
Pr
(896.3 kPa). Look for cuts and cracks in the tire’s sidewalls and for foreign objects in the
tread.
4. Check the front/rear axle differential cases and planetary hubs for oil leaks.

6. Check for damage to the vehicle’s lights and beacons. Check that all lights are in proper
working order.
7. Check that the fire extinguishers are in place and fully charged .
8. Look underneath the tractor for signs of leaking coolant, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid,
or lubricating oil. If significant leaks are found, repair them before using the unit for regualar
operation.
s
9. Check the engine oil.
ne
WARNING: DO NOT LOOSEN OR REMOVE THE RADIATOR CAP
rli
WHEN THE COOLANT IS HOT. HOT COOLANT UNDER PRESSURE
CAN SPRAY OR BOIL OUT, CAUSING SEVERE BURNS.
Ai
10. Check that the engine coolant level is approximately 1-1/2 in (4 cm) below top of radiator fill
neck. If not, add coolant as necessary, being careful not to overfill. Visually check for
an
coolant leaks.
11.
ic
Inspect the engine compartment for loose hardware, loose wires, and leaking lines or fittings.
er
12. Check the hydraulic fluid level in the sight glass on the hydraulic reservoir. The sight glass is
slightly above eye level on the driver’s side of the vehicle between the front and rear axles. A
Am
very low fluid level indicates a serious leak in the system. If that is the case, find the leak and
repair it immediately.
13. Check the operation of the hazard flasher, stoplights, taillights, headlights, backup lights, and
of
Note NOTE: By keeping the fuel tank as full as possible, the tendency for
moisture to condense on the inner surfaces of the fuel tank can be minimized

15. Place one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the Emergency Steering switch.
ne
Depress the switch and hold it down while turning the steering wheel a quarter turn or less in
each direction. Listen to the pump’s operation. The steering wheel should turn effortlessly
rli
and the feel and sound should be smooth. Release the switch.
Ai
16. Start the engine. With the (foot) brake pedal depressed, cycle the transmission through all
gears and allow transmission to reach 160 °F (71.8 °C). Return to neutral and check the
transmission’s oil level. Add oil as required but do not overfill.

(a) The transmission selector is an electronic control unit with a stick type selector.
There is a forward and reverse selector side for the transmission selector. The selector
control normally resides in the neutral position. The desired direction of travel is
always selected starting from the neutral position. Forward gears are selected by
depressing the button on top of the shifter joystick and pushing it forward. Pushing
the joystick to the right will up-shift and pushing it to the left will down shift. The
desired gear can be observed on the gauge on the dash. Reverse is done in the
s
opposite manner. Depressing the button on top of the joystick and pulling back on it,
ne
will select Reverse 1. To up-shift, follow the same procedures as for selecting a
forward gear. Note there are 4 forward speeds and 2 reverse speeds.
rli
(b) The ZF Powershift transmission must be manually shifted into the desired gear. Use
Ai
the gear most appropriate for the conditions. Shift to the next higher speed when the
top speed in any particular gear is reached. Do not tow farther than 6.2 miles (10 km)
or faster than 6 mph (10 km/hr). Only tow aircraft in first or second gear.
an
(c) Generally, up shifting and down shifting is best accomplished by shifting through the
ic
normal sequence of speeds. Downshifting will produce a braking effect, unless the
engine is stopped. In that case, no braking will occur.
er
(d) Stop the tractor before shifting into any reverse speed.
Am
STOP SUDDENLY.
op
(e) Neutral (N). Select Neutral when starting the engine, when checking the tractor’s
accessories, and when idling the engine for extended periods. Use NEUTRAL with
the parking brake set if leaving the tractor unattended with the engine running.

(g) Reverse 1-2. Select a speed range in Reverse adequate to the task at hand. The
reverse gears work in the same manner as the forward speed ranges.
(h) Rear Cab Shift Selector. The Rear Cab Shift Selector is tagged with four forward
speeds and two reverse. The third and fourth forward gears are the same. Otherwise,
the rear cab shifter operates identically to the front cab shifter.

tractor can be placed into gear and be allowed to move. Either of these
actions will cause the rear axle to automatically align to the correct position
based on the front axle’s position.
Pr
(f) The LCD display always shows the position of the rear axle because the rear axle is
the only axle being controlled by the steering computer. The front axle is solely
controlled by the steering wheel (i.e. the operator).

(h) The steering mode can be changed at any angle while the transmission is in neutral.
(i) If the transmission is placed into either 3rd or 4th gear, the LCD display will give a
warning beep and will place the system into TRACK mode. If the tractor is moving,
the rear axle will lock into place the next time that the operator brings it to the center
position. If the tractor is not moving, turning the steering wheel will move the rear
axle to the center position automatically. For safety reasons, no other modes besides
TRACK mode can be used in 3rd or 4th gears due the achievable speeds in these
gears.
s
ne

8. Moving an Aircraft
Each individual airline has established procedures for attaching the tractor to an aircraft,
detaching the tractor from an aircraft, or for towing or pushing back an aircraft. All operators
must be familiar with these procedures prior to operating the tractor in any aircraft related
operations. Aircraft should only be towed in low gear to prevent transmission/power train
overheating.
