ENTHALPY
WHAT IS
ENTHALPY?
E N T H A L P Y
It is defined as the sum of the internal energy
and the product of the pressure and volume.

H = U + P V

SUM of INTERNAL ENERGY and the PRODUCT OF PRESSURE AND VOLUME.

E N T H A L P Y
ΔH = ΔU + PΔV

ΔU = Q + W
ΔU = Q - PΔV
ΔH = Q - PΔV + PΔV

E N T H A L P Y
The heat is absorbed or given off by a
system under the condition of constant
pressure.

If ΔH is > 0 = ENDOTHERMIC
If ΔH is < 0 = EXOTHERMIC

An ideal gas expands from a volume of 6
dm³ to 16 dm³ against constant external
pressure of 2.026 x 10⁵ N/m². Find the
enthalpy change if ΔU is 418 J.
