Freewriting

The most interesting thing about my field is. . . .

That I can use data to understand how language works. By understanding corpora data, I can learn

which words are the most frequent in different disciplines. I can also figure out which collocations are

the most common. By focusing on these, students can learn phrases and combinations of words which

are most likely to be encountered.

When I am using corpus linguistics software, it is great to be able to run tests and visualize the data.

So many of my language students don’t learn well because the are always encountering word which

are too hard from them. This discourages them and makes them give up.

One of the best ways of using corpus data is by making graded readers. Graded readers are leveld

books. This way, and student can get as much input as possible. This is what Krashen calls c

Five years after I graduate I want to. . . . .

Be working in Spain as the head of an English for Academic purposes department. In this kind of

department, I would be in charge of helping out with the needs of both the students and the teachers.

This kind of department is most common in institutions which teacher theri classes through the medium

of English (EMI). In EMI contexts, students for whom English is not their L1 study content through the

medium of English. This presents many difficulties for students. For example, the words that someone

learns through an EIL course are different, and don’t really help students the way the words from, for

example, the New Academic Wordlist do. Thes words, unlike common words, empower the students to

write in new and interesting ways. They help students to follow the common academic writing

conventions.

I would help with, not on the needs of the students, but also with the needs of the professors. It is

difficult to teach, and earning an advanced research degree in a field, like PhD does not prepare one to

teach. This is big problem with academia today. Teachers don’t know how to teach.

Freewriting

The last thing she said to me before she disappeared. . . . .

Was that she was going on vacation to Europe. I’m not sure if she meant it or not, but I know she was

done with me.

We hadn’t been the best to eachother. I’d like to lay all of the blame on her, but that is never how things

work, especially not with us.

Sure, we’d argue, but who doesn’t. I mean, that’s just part of it, right? The daily arguing, the gaslighting,

the throwing of stuff, that’s just life, right, normal stuff?

The last think I remember seeing was the tail lights of her truck as she drove away, well, my truck

actually. I also haven’t seen that truck since she left.

I’d had the truck for a long time, but longer than we’d been together, and I liked that truck. My dog was

in the truck when she left. I haven’t seen him either.

I world remotely, from my laptop, as a web designer. And I know what you’re thinking. . . .Yup, the

laptop was in the truck too.

Also, all of my clothes. That is why I am standing here naked. But I did have one cigarette tucked

behind my ear, so I don’t have nothing. Time for a smoke.

Ah! That’s nice. I feel good. Things are good.
