HANDOUTS IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE

MODULE 12:LESSON 1

ALCOHOL ETHOXYLATE (AE)

-Enchance the mixing and solubilization of oil and water by having these
contrasting sections within the same compound. It can be used whenever oily
substances encounter water or a surface.

SODIUM ALKYL SULFATES

-Water-soluble and can form soap bubbles. It can produce irritating vapors
when heated, consisting of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and
others. Also be used as fire extinguishing agent becuase it is not flammable and can
irritate your skin and eyes.

AMINE OXIDE
-Also known as amine -N-oxide and N-oxide. It is very hydrophilic and have an
exellent water solubility and very poor solubility in most organic solvents. Bond with
three addtional hydrogen and hydrocarbon side chains attached to long-chain aklyl
amine oxides.

AMMONIA
-Also called “household ammonia”. A chemical containing one nitrogen and
three hydrogen atoms bonded together. Traditionally used in any household
cleaners, though today it’s still found in glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaners and
smelling salts.

SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE
-Also known as bleach is another alkali disinfectant. Works by oxidizing or
breaking down the molecular bonds of stains and germs. Also has strong corrosive
properties that may do serious damage to the human body.

ETHANOL
-Highly flammable and should not be used near open flames. Makes an
effective solvent for use in paints, lacquers and varnish as well as personal care and
household cleaning products.

PHENOL
-Also known as benzenol or carbolic acid. More soluble in water than are
alcohols and have higher boiling points. Occur either as colorless liquids or white
solids widely used in household products and as intermediates for industrial.

JOSEPH LISTER
- A British Surgeon in 1865 he used phenol as an antiseptic to sterilize his
operation field.
QUATERNARY AMMONIUM
-A family of low-level disinfectants with most quats being derived from
benzalkonium. Generally used to disinfect countertops, toilets and other high touch
environment al surfaces and floors. Also be absorted by materials and fibers
including cotton, cleaning rags and mops.

SODIUM PERCARBONATE
-A powder that releases hydrogen peroxide and very concentrated. a
granulated powder which can be nice for scubbing stains and tuck-on-gunk.

LEMON
-to clean and disinfect your microwave oven or remove the stubborn stain on
your cutting board. The steam produced loosens all the dirt which can later be wiped
and cleaned.

WALNUT
-cut walnut into half and use it to remove scratches from furniture.

ONION
-heat the oven to a high temperature and rub the inside of the onion onto
the grate using a long fork. This will remove all the stubborn grime and dirt from the
grates.

BANANA PEEL
-blend the banana peel with little water to make a paste. Use this paste to
polish your silverware.

CUCUMBER
-slices of cucumber can be used to polish stainless steel including your
utensils and faucets.
