Assessment 2 ‘What a Waste’ Report Scaffold for Students:

Introduction:
 Overall assessment of the statement “waste is everyone’s problem and therefore everyone’s responsibility” from a household’s
perspective.
 What is household waste? --> Find some statistics about household waste in your council area, the state and Australia.
o How much household waste does Australia produce annually?
 Which two types of waste will you be discussing?
 What are some methods of disposal of waste in your council or state?

Specific types of waste:

 Organic --> potential to talk about composting
 Single use plastics (soft plastics) --> Recycling at coles and woolies
 Single use plastics (cutlery) --> landfill but potential to talk about reducing use
 Electronic waste
 Batteries
 Recyclable rubbish (QUITE BROAD)

What a Waste Writing Scaffold – Using PEEL
Sometimes, it is a clever idea to come back to write the introduction after you have written your body paragraphs, so you know how to
summarise each key idea.

Body paragraphs
There will be two - three body paragraphs to support your overall judgement. Each paragraph should be 5-10 sentences. In Science assessment
tasks, it is especially important to support any claims made with evidence from reliable sources and reference them appropriately. The PEEL
scaffold will help you write a clear paragraph. For this assessment, you will also need to assess your individual and household ecological
footprint.
Body Paragraph Example: Resource - Single Use Plastics
P – Point
E – Evidence
E – Explanation
E – Evidence
REFLECT
L – Link

Point: Waste produced from single-use plastic is unnecessary as it [insert reason]. Everyone has the responsibility to reduce their use of single
use plastics.
Evidence: Single use plastic is…. [Describe the resource - What is it?] Each household produces …[insert statistic with reference], and
Australia produces… According to [insert statistic with reference], the majority of single use plastic comes from (water bottles? cutlery?).
Explanation: The negative impacts of single use plastics include [insert reasons].
Evidence: Although [insert statistic with reference] % of Australian’s sort plastic into recycling at home, [insert statistic with reference]
tonnes of single use plastic ends up… [Describe the recycling process or lack thereof].

REFLECT on ways to reduce individual and household ecological footprint: In my household, we dispose of single-use plastics in the red
landfill bin as there are not that many options to reuse single-use plastics. In an effort to counteract our impact on the environment, I
recommend that we refrain from accepting single-use plastics and carry around reusable cutlery instead. In our local council area of Canada
Bay, landfill is sent to... and over time, this will increase... Canada Bay has various options which allow citizens to reduce their ecological
footprint due to... [insert information from local council source].

Link: Overall, despite our attempts to…, there is still a negative/positive impact on the environment.
Hence, this is why/why not waste and recycling is everyone’s responsibility.

Conclusion:
Your conclusion should restate your overall judgement about the statement: “Waste is everyone’s problem, therefore everyone’s responsibility”.
You should summarise your key points and finish with a clear judgement.

In conclusion, while waste is everyone’s problem and cannot be eradicated, it can be reduced significantly by my household. Instead of …, we
could do... This could benefit our environment for years to come, make our parks and beaches more enjoyable to visit, and cost less money in the
long run.
