THE SCENARIO:

You are a digital media specialist for The Cat Cafe - a unique establishment where
customers can relax with a drink or a meal alongside one of the dozen or so resident
cats. Two months ago, the store lost its license to operate due to Animal Welfare
violations - they had 60 cats in one space. To continue operation, they’ve turned their
cafe into a cooking school where customers cook their own food, making the place
even quirkier. Given this situation, the owner of the establishment, your boss, asks you to
design a digital promotional poster to help gain traction and promote the business in its
new phase.

Before creating a digital poster, you will first need to go through the brainstorming
process guided by the 5 Phases of Design Thinking. Be sure to fill in all the necessary
details asked for in the table.

NOTE: Phase 4 and 5 will be done in the next section, “Evaluate.”

DESIGN THINKING GUIDING QUESTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES BRAINSTORMING IDEAS

PHASES
1. Empathize Who are your users or target market?
What reasons would they have to visit
the cafe? What makes them click?

2. Define What are your users’ or target

audience’s needs? What is a problem
they face that you can help with?

3. Ideate What creative ideas or innovative

design solutions can you think of to
answer the needs of both your boss
(cafe owner) and your target market?

4. Prototype These two phases will be part of the next section, “Evaluate”
5. Test

1
This is a continuation of the Elaborate section, specifically fulfilling Phase 4
(Prototype) and Phase 5 (Test). Your task for this section is to create the digital
promotional poster for the cafe you work in.

Size of digital poster: 18 x 24 inches

Submit a high resolution digital copy AND (1) print version

The main goal is for the poster to be engaging and effective to grow the number
of cafe visits and customers. The poster design should apply the principles and theories of
design you learned about in the Explore section of this unit. To be specific, your design
concept should have the following:

✔ An application of two (2) Gestalt Principles of Visual Perception

✔ An inclusion of two (2) Elements of Design
✔ An inclusion of two (2) Principles of Design

You should include an explanation as to how these principles and theories were
used and incorporated into the design of your poster. This explanation should be
included in your submission as the second page of your project. You may use any
application, app, or program to create the digital poster. Once finished, save the file in
the given USB.

The following will be the rubric from which your digital poster will be evaluated on:
