HOW TO PREVENT RUST

To understand how to prevent rust, we first need to

know how it occurs.

Rust is the output of:

O2 + FE + H2O  FeO3H2O (rust)

When these chemicals react together, it gives what we know as

rust. This is called “Corrosion.” When these metals continue to
oxidise, the metal becomes weaker over time.

Rust is a reddish or yellowish-brown flaking coating of iron

oxide formed on iron or steel by oxidation, especially in
moisture. From this, we can understand that it is
moisture, so if it is moisture, we can put something that
can take away moisture.

Rust is generally considered to be a nuisance and something to be avoided. It weakens metal and can
cause it to break down over time. However, some people find the appearance of rusted metal to be
aesthetically pleasing and use it in art or as a design element. Additionally, rust can be used as a
pigment to create a reddish-brown colour.

There are several ways to prevent rust.

Some methods work by stopping oxygen
or water from reaching the surface of the
metal. These methods include oiling,
greasing, painting, and coating with a thin
layer of plastic. Another method is
galvanising, where the iron or steel object
is coated in a thin layer of zinc. This stops
oxygen and water from reaching the metal
underneath, but the zinc also acts as a
sacrificial metal.
