VITO Average Temperature Troubleshooting Guide

*Refer to Instruction Manual VITO and Installation Guide 762 VITO Interfaces & VITO, MTT, LT and MRT Probes

HCU / 762 VITO error codes and definitions:

-----------
All errors from the MPU start with 22, HPU start with 24, HSU start with 28 and HCU start with 30 (replace xx with 22, 24, 28 or 30).
VITO MTT/MRT average temperatures:
Error
xx00 NO_ERROR
xx11 NO_REPLY_ON_INITIAL_HART_COMMANDS
Communication error between level gauge and 762 VITO Interface. Can be caused by:
1. HCU – (Check the voltage on the HCU output terminals (HART1). Must be approximately 15-19Vdc. If no voltage or low voltage,
change HCU board. Check voltage with no wires terminated in case of short in wiring to 762 VITO Interface)
2. Cable between HCU and VITO Interface – (Check that terminal connections and that the wires are good between the gauge and VITO
Interface. Check polarity and resistances)
3. 762 VITO Interface – (If 1 and 2 are OK the suspect is the VITO interface, change VITO Interface)
xx50..xx65 SPOT_ERROR 0..15
1. Check all wires of VITO probe are properly connected to the 762 VITO Interface
2. Check resistance diagnostics
3. If resistance diagnostic measurements are good, then try replacing the 762 VITO interface
xx50 Pt100 (or spot 0) error Brown wire connected to CN1 A-1 (or orange wire connected to CN2B-1) not
connected, check element wires.
xx51 Spot 1 (or Pt100) error Blue wire to CN2B-1 (or brown wire to CN1A-1) not connected, check element wires.
xx52 Spot 2 error Blue wire to CN2A-2 not connected, check element wires.
xx52…xx63 Spot 3 thru Spot 13 error Blue wires, check element wires.
xx64 Spot 14 error Blue wire to CN5A-2 not connected, check element wires.
xx65 Spot 15 error Yellow wire to CN5A-1 not connected, check element wires.
xx70 SUBSYSTEM_ERROR
Data from 762 VITO Interface is not valid. Reset level gauge; if error persists, check Pt100 wiring (red – brown wires). If error still persists,
replace the 762 VITO interface PCB.
xx71 WRONG_PROBE_CONNECTION
Thermocouple wires of VITO probe not connected properly to 762 VITO (blue and yellow wires, etc), correct wiring, or, isolation resistance VITO
sensor too low (replace VITO Probe). Check VITO resistance diagnostics.
xx72 NOT_SUPPORTED_ELEMENT_TYPE
Verify gauge item MT is set correct (MT=TPL for VITO or VITO LT. See manual for proper setting with MRT probe)
xx73 WRONG_ELEMENT_CONFIGURATION
Verify gauge item MN is set correct (16 for VITO and 09 for VITO LT)

1
xx77 WRONG_PT100_CONNECTION
Brown and red wires of VITO probe not connected properly, correct element wiring in VITO interface
xx80 R_TEST_ERROR
Measurement on test resistor failed or out of limits. Reset level gauge; if error persists, replace the 762 VITO. Check VITO resistance
diagnostics.
xx81 R_CABLE_ERROR
Measurement of cable resistance failed or out of limits. Reset level gauge; if error persists, replace the 762 VITO. Check VITO resistance
diagnostics.
xx84 STANDARD_DEVIATION_TOO_LARGE
1. EMC influence (check cable shields and proper grounding) or defective 762 VITO
2. Check resistance diagnostics
3. If resistance diagnostic measurements are good, then try replacing the 762 VITO interface
xx91 WRONG_ELEMENT_POSITION_TABLE
Wrong J0..JD settings of MRT probe. Check these items.
xx92 NO_DATA_AVAILABLE
Communication error between 762 VITO and level gauge (refer to xx11)
xx98 NO_TEMPERATURE_SOURCES_FOUND
No VITO probe (and no RTD) connected
3399 XA_SECURITY_BITS_ERROR

2
Resistance Diagnostics
With a resistance meter some diagnostics can be made on the VITO MTT Thermocouple Elements
IMPORTANT: Be sure all element wires are disconnected from the 762 VITO interface when performing measurements
To check if the VITO probe is shorted internally check the measured resistances with the expected resistances indicated below
*Between any of the wires and the housing of 762 VITO box or ground the results should be > few Mega ohms
Also, a test can be made by temporarily disconnecting the yellow/green ground wire from the terminal on the VITO Interface as seen below
and resetting the gauge. If the error clears then the probe is most likely damaged and should be replaced
