1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this method statement is to ensure that pipes are installed with the correct
methods and material as specified. This method statement details the procedures to be
followed for pipe laying.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
PM/DPM shall ensure that all necessary tools & Instruments, safety protective
equipments are provided along with properly trained and qualified surveyors
and made available sufficiently in advance to the commencement of the work.

Safety Officer has to implement and enforce all safety precautions. He will also inspect the
work site regularly, and report deficiencies to the DPM / PM.

Site Engineer is responsible for the construction work and shall delegate a named Site
Supervisor who shall ensure that this procedure is fully implemented including
documentation till completion.

Surveyor is responsible to ensure that all surveying instrument being used are calibrated
and having valid calibration certificate and he shall ensure that all information,
data etc. required is to be taken and recorded on his Field Book.
4.0 ACTIONS
4.1 The pipes received from the supplier and stacked, will be transported to site of
installation, taking special care to avoid any damage during loading, transportation, off-
loading, lowering, etc. (By means of using four ways sling during loading / off-loading,
using hook shaped with protection coating during lowering).

4.2 All pipes to be installed will be lifted using cotton belts, using wide flat slings maintained
sufficiently widely apart to allow sling gripping and to prevent accidental slippage.
4.3 Pipes to be laid will be re-checked for defects and damages prior to placing and
approved by the Engineer.
4.4 Due care will be exercised during the usage of manual and mechanical tools and hoist for
lifting and lowering, in order to ensure smooth handling of pipes and internal cement
lining.
4.5 Bedding material will be spread, levelled and compacted on pre-checked trench
formation.
4.6 Pipe laying will be done as following:
a. Cleaning carefully pipe spigot, socket, gasket seat and gasket.
b. Insert the gasket into the socket, looping it into a heart shape with lip seal nose
directed towards, then apply radial pressure to it force it into seat position.
c. By brush, lubricant must be applied to exposed surface of gasket, spigot end and
chamfer then push the spigot into the socket by means of:
- The crowbar (for pipes dia. 80 to 100mm) or digger bucket method.
- Mechanical winches will be used for bigger dia >150mm.
d. Checking
- Push the spigot until the first mark disappears inside the socket and second
mark must be still visible after assembly.
- Check the gasket is correctly seated by inserting a gasket feeler.
4.7 Wrapping for flanged joints will be applied as follows:
a. The unwrapped joint area shall be cleaned to remove all rust, dust and other loose
and deleterious matter.
b. The unwrapped joint area and the main tape coating 100mm either side of the
joint shall be cleaned to remove all dust, dirt, grease and other deleterious matter.
c. The dry, cleaned, prepared metal area to be brush primed with one thin
continuous coat of the tape manufacturer’s quick drying primer. The finished
coating of primer shall be free of sags and shall be allowed to dry completely.
d. The step between the spigot and socket area to be “shaped-up” with approved
moulding putty to give a smooth profile for wrapping. The joint area to be spirally
wrapped with the approved tape with an overlap of 55% and using sufficient
tension to ensure complete conformability with the main tape coating and joint.
The finished wrap shall be free from wrinkles and puckers. The wrapping shall
commence and end 75mm onto the main tape coating either side of the joint.
e. End laps between all adjoining rolls shall be a minimum of 75mm.

4.9 For each complete section, alignment, levels, slopes will be checked jointly with the
Consultant.
