BCH/BIO 3170B Molecular Biology

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
From the University calendar: “Gene structure, action and replication: cellular regulation, allosteric properties
of proteins, molecular basis of membrane function and control of cell growth.” The Molecular Biology course
focuses on biological processes such as DNA repair, replication, recombination and transposition,
transcription and regulatory mechanisms, as well as mechanisms which regulate gene expression in both
prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The material is presented with an emphasis on the application of previously
learned concepts to the reactions governing the biological processes of DNA organisation and expression.
Students will learn to apply basic concepts to explain the molecular structures and molecular reactions.
Prerequisites: BCH2333 and BIO2133

WHEN: Monday: 8:30am – 10:00am PROFESSOR: Dr. Odette Laneuville

Thursday: 10:00am - 11:30am Faculty of Science - Biology
Gendron Bldg. Room 4-449
olaneuvi@uottawa.ca
WHERE: Vanier Hall VNR5070

COURSE FORMAT:
- Bi-weekly lectures of the subjects listed in the syllabus will be presented using Power Point
Presentations (PPP) made available to students the day prior to each lecture through the University
managed Blackboard Learn platform.

- For each individual subject, a list of approximately 10 learning objectives will be provided to students
and will be listed at the end of the presentation of individual subjects.

- A series of short videos prepared by Dr. Laneuville describing answers to each learning objectives
related to the subjects will be made available to students through the University managed Blackboard
Learn platform. Note that VIDEOS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR SOME SUBJECTS.

- After each lecture and in preparation for the examinations, students are encouraged to first answer
the learning objectives and then to use the videos to verify the completeness and exactitude of their
answers.

PEDAGOGICAL MATERIAL:
- PPP used during lectures will be posted on Blackboard Learn 24 hours prior to each lecture. Some of
the material presented during lectures has been left out on purpose with the intention to encourage
participation of students during lectures. Changes of the content will be announced during class and
posted afterwards.

- Learning Objectives for individual subjects are listed at the end of PPP for individual subjects listed in
the syllabus.

- Videos describing the answers to individual Learning Objectives prepared by Dr. Laneuville only are
posted online via Blackboard Learn platform managed by the University of Ottawa.

- Textbooks: there are no required textbook for the Molecular Biology course. The most recent edition
of the following textbooks are placed on reserve at the Morisset Library:

Molecular Biology of the Cell (Alberts), Genes (Lewin), Biologie moléculaire de la cellule (Alberts),
Molecular Biology of the Gene (Watson)

EVALUATION:
- Final marks for the course will be calculated from the scores of 3 written exams; two midterm exams and
one final exam.

- ALL 3 EXAMS CONTRIBUTE TO THE FINAL MARK.

- Exams are not cumulative.

- Scheduling of the exams: the dates of the first 2 mid-term exams are indicated in the syllabus and the date
of the final exam is determined by the Faculty of Science.

- Calculation of the final mark for the course:

Score Midterm 1 (30%) + Score Midterm 2 (30%) + Score Final exam (40%) = Final
mark for the course.

Note that ALL rules and regulations of the Faculty of Science relative to this course
and to ALL the exams apply with no exception.
If you cannot write one of the 2 midterms, you must provide justification in agreement with the rules and
regulations of the Faculty of Science. You must provide the original copy of a valid medical certificate
justifying your absence at the exam within 48 hrs after the tenure of the exam. The original medical certificate
(no photocopy or any other type of reproduction) must be provided in writing (no emails will be accepted) to
Dr. Laneuville or to the administrative assistant Ms. Annie Laprise in room 170 Gendron Hall.

If you provide a valid medical note or a valid justification on time, the calculation of your final mark will be the
sum of 40% of the midterm you wrote plus 60% of your final exam. Failure to provide a valid medical
certificate or valid justification on time will result in a 0 as your mark for the exam you have missed.

If you are absent at the final exam, you are required to contact the Faculty of Science and, if authorized, you
will write a deferral exam in February 2017.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
It is your responsibility to review and understand the policies of the University of Ottawa related to academic
fraud. ALL regulations pertaining to academic fraud are applicable to this course.

The policies and regulations related to academic fraud are described at this link:
