fire spread quickly through the building, trapping many people in the upper floors. With only
one exit stairway (that, unfortunately, provided a conduit for the fire as many of its doors
had been propped open), no fire alarm system, and no fire sprinkler system, the 119
fatalities from this fire made it the deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history,

the time as 2:45). It spread through two stairways and all the halls, killing 20 people
